Did You Know? This Croatia Itinerary Will Surprise You !

Introduction : Croatia itinerary

It is with great excitement that I wanted to share my experience in Croatia with you ! Most people who go on vacation head over to either Greece or Italy, while Croatia is such an undiscovered jewel. It is quite rare to come across a destination, where what you can do in 24 hours includes touring Roman ruins, sunbathing on perfect beaches, and then hiking through stunning national parks. It's quite crazy.

To get started, let’s check some of my personal favorite places in Croatia. I have crafted an exceptionally made Croatia itinerary that will allow you to truly see Croatia in a different light that is not focused on tourist attractions. You’ll hear more from me about Zagrab, a charming city filled with beautiful cafes, the Plitvice Lakes that look even better in real life, and many more places that I wish to show you.

What excites me the most is Croatia is a place where everyone will feel at home. If you are like my friend Dave who loves visiting historical places and gets excited by old architecture, a photographer looking forward to capturing breathtaking waterfalls, or someone who just wants lay on the beach, I have something for everyone. Do you wish to know how to make your Croatian trip more memorable? Allow me to explain how!

Day 1-2: Exploring the Enchanting Vibes of Zagreb

Zagreb - My First Love in Croatia

The first time I read the word Zagreb on the train signboard, it looked quite odd to me. However, the moment I stepped off the train, I was welcomed. I remember vividly how Croatia’s capital overwhelmed me at first; it was a wonderful combination of strength and appeal where scenic Austro-Hungarian structures stood arm to arm with eclectic coffee shops. Look no more – this is the right destination for anyone willing to explore Croatia!

Old Town (Gornji Grad) - My Favourite Bit of Zagreb

Let me show you around my favourite part of Zagreb - the Old Town (or Gornji Grad as the locals call it). I spent hours getting lost in these medieval streets and you should too!

  • Ban Jelačić Square: This is the hub of everything! I love to grab a coffee here and people watch. Fun fact: the square is named after a proper Croatian hero from the 1800s.
  • Dolac Market: Pop up from Ban Jelačić Square and you’ll find yourself in foodie paradise. I always head straight to the cheese stalls - the lovely ladies selling them will often let you try a bit for free!
  • St. Mark’s Church: You can’t miss this one - literally! That technicolour roof with the Croatian coat of arms is proper Instagram material. I think it’s best visited early morning when the crowds are smaller.
St.MarkSt.Mark

Eating (In the Best Way Possible!)

Right, let’s talk about the food! Zagreb’s food scene is pretty great, mixing traditional with modern. Here’s what you must try:

  • Strukli: Imagine cheese filled dough that’s either baked or boiled. Bliss!
  • Peka: This slow cooked meat and veg dish is bloody brilliant. The secret’s in the bell-shaped lid and hot coals.
  • Kremšnita: Save room for this creamy pastry pudding - it’s worth every calorie!

For the best grub I’d recommend popping into La Štruk (strukli specialists!), Konoba Didov San (homestyle cooking) or Vinodol (a bit fancy but worth it). Go on, treat yourself!

Optional activities in Croatia: Nightlife and Cultural Events

Would you want to enjoy some local culture or perhaps have some fun in the evening? I have got you covered. Allow me to show you my favorite places in Zagreb so that you can make the best out of your evenings.

Now in order for a proper night out, Tkalčićeva Street is where everything goes down! So last summer, I traveled to the Swanky Monkey Garden and blooming hell, what a place! Sharing a cold Croatian craft beer together with locals and other travelers is a pleasure!

On the other hand, if you happen to be a culture lover (like myself!), I have a good news. The Zagreb Film Festival fascinated me with indie films and the event in Zagreb was actually very enjoyable! And the Croatian National Theatre? Lovely, darling! I watched a ballet in there and was lost for words..

I tell you what, Zagreb has got this great feature where they are able to combine old with new. For this exciting destination combine two worlds, stay tuned because we are going to Plitvice Lakes.

Day 3-4: Discovering Natural Wonders at Plitvice Lakes National Park

Best Places to Visit in Croatia: The Magical World of Plitvice Lakes

I’ll never forget my first time at Plitvice Lakes National Park - it was like stepping into a fairy tale! Imagine: 16 lakes, crystal clear, connected by waterfalls that seem to be dancing through the landscape, all within 295 square km of pure Croatian wilderness. No wonder it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site!

Two Lake Systems

Want to know the best way to see this natural wonder? Let me tell you. You’ll want to spend a full day here - I promise you won’t regret it!

Upper Lakes: A Peaceful Oasis

I started my day in the Upper Lakes (Gornja Jezera). It’s brilliant up here! You’ll be walking on wooden boardwalks that hover above the water, surrounded by lakes and proper thick forest. It’s usually quieter here so it’s perfect for those holiday snaps you’ve been dreaming of.

Lower Lakes: Nature’s Drama Queens

And then the Lower Lakes (Donja Jezera) - that’s where the drama happens! The waterfalls here are proper show-offs, tumbling down limestone cliffs into pools of the most incredible blue-green water you’ve ever seen. Yes, it gets busy but blimey, those views are worth sharing with a few fellow tourists!

Here’s a top tip from my experience: plan for a circular route that takes in both areas. It’ll take you 4-6 hours, depending on how many photo stops. Oh, and don’t be daft like I was on my first visit - wear proper walking shoes. The wooden walkways become extremely slick, particularly when wet from rainfall.

Hidden Gems along the Trails in your Croatia Itinerary

I have been lucky enough to visit some of the secluded areas inside Plitvice Lakes and I must say, people are not seeing the whole picture! There are some absolute gems which I have come across while taking the road less traveled, while everyone is focused on the Main Spot photos (which are stunning in their own right). While there are several beautiful spots to take pictures at, there are some lesser known locations that I have managed to find when taking a different route.

Take Veliki Slap for example – at 78 metres the height is incredible enough and the views are breathtaking. What I love most about it is the fact that I stumbled upon it during one of my strolls and clearly, I was not prepared for such views! Then there’s this little secret that I found while climbing up the hill, its called the Surpljara Cave. It’s not that far from the main trail and trust me the view is astonishing.

I have heard people say that in order to get the best Instagram shots, there is a technique that you must follow and I have come to learn that they were right. Plan your visit around the morning or when the sun is setting as the daylight is just splendid at those times.

Let me share with you some of my favorite tips which may help you structure your plan better (and also help you avoid getting overwhelmed with people):

  1. Get there early! 7 AM is the best time to arrive - it’s super peaceful in the morning.
  2. Buy your tickets online in advance - it saves time and stress.
  3. Go during the week if you can. Weekends are crazy busy.
  4. Come prepared: bring water, snacks, sun protection and a hat. Facilities are limited throughout the park so be self sufficient.

Whether you visit the main attractions or hidden gems, Plitvice Lakes is a must see on any Croatian trip.

Day 5-6: City Adventures and History in Split

Come along with me on a personal tour of one of my favourite places in Croatia - Diocletian’s Palace and Split’s Old Town. You’re going to love it!

Diocletian’s Palace: Where History Meets Cool

I’ll never forget my first time walking into Diocletian’s Palace - it totally blew my mind! This UNESCO World Heritage Site isn’t your average old palace. Built in the 4th century (can you even believe it?) it’s like a mini city where ancient Roman walls house trendy shops and cozy cafes. How cool is that?

Here’s what you can’t miss:

  • The Peristyle Square - the heart of the palace where you might find live music or local events
  • Cathedral of St. Domnius - fun fact: it was originally Emperor Diocletian’s tomb! Now it’s one of the oldest cathedrals in the world
  • The Underground Chambers - these are pretty cool. The Romans were clever buggers when it came to engineering

Exploring Split’s Old Town

Right, once you’ve had your fill of the palace (though honestly, can you ever?), it’s time to get lost in Split’s Old Town. I love wandering through these narrow streets - you never know what you’ll find!

Must see:

  • The Riva Promenade - grab a coffee, find a seat and watch the world go by. It’s lovely, especially at sunset
  • Pazar Market - pop in in the morning for the freshest produce and local treats. The old ladies selling their homegrown veg are adorable!
Split CroatiaSplit Croatia

Game of Thrones Tour

I’m a big Game of Thrones fan and let me tell you, Split is a dream for any fan of the show! I couldn’t believe my eyes when I first walked through the places where they filmed some of the most famous scenes.

You know those amazing scenes in Daenerys’s throne room? Well, I was over the moon when I found out they were filmed right here in Diocletian’s Palace Substructures. The atmosphere down there is totally enchanting - you can almost hear the dragons roaring!

Just a short bus ride from Split you’ll find Klis Fortress which is Meereen. I spent hours exploring every corner of this place. The history here is amazing!

Diocletian CroatiaDiocletian Croatia

Views from Klis Fortress

Want to see one of the best views in Croatia? Go to Klis Fortress - you won’t regret it! I was standing there, mouth agape, at the view before me. The fortress is perched at the top of a hill and has been watching over Split for centuries.

What to do? I’d say:

  • Wander around the old walls and towers
  • Take some great photos (you can’t take a bad one here)

Where to Eat and Party in Split

Right, let’s talk about the food - because honestly, it’s great! The restaurants here serve up some top-notch grub, whether you want traditional Croatian or something a bit more modern.

You must try:

  • Pašticada - this slow-cooked beef is to die for
  • Fresh fish straight from the Adriatic
  • Peka - imagine the most tender meat or seafood you’ve ever had, that’s peka!

Want to go out? The Riva Promenade is lively after dark. I’ve had some great nights out there, jumping between bars and dancing to live music till the early hours.

Two days in Split is just enough. Whether you’re a history nut like me or just want good food and a night out, Split’s got it all. Every time I go I find something new - it’s that sort of place!

Day 7-8: Island Bliss on Hvar and Vis

Hvar, a beautiful Croatian island in the Adriatic Sea, has it all - beaches and a promenade. Must see on any Croatian trip.

Relaxation and Explore Hvar

  • Beaches: Relax on beaches like Dubovica or Pokonji Dol. The turquoise sea is perfect for a swim and a break from the sun.
  • Harbour Walk: As the sun sets, walk along Hvar's promenade. Here you'll find bars, restaurants and shops, all surrounded by old town architecture.

Tip: For an authentic experience, try local dishes like gregada (a traditional fish stew) at one of the seaside restaurants.

Hvar CroatiaHvar Croatia

Things to do in Croatia: Boat Excursion to Vis Island

I have to tell you about this little gem of Croatia - Vis Island! Just a short hop on a boat and you'll find yourself in what I can only describe as heaven on earth. I was blown away by how untouched it all is!

Hidden Beaches and Secret Spots

Although there are countless gorgeous beaches displayed on postcards, Stiniva Beach is more stunning than any of them. It was breathtaking to round the cliffs and catch a glimpse of the beach for the first time. Which is why it is frequently rated as one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, Also, speaking of pictures, they actually don’t do the beach any justice!

Fish Call For a Swim. Well with the water being that clear, fish will always swim in the surrounding areas. I spent hours snorkeling in that water, and it felt like I was placed in an aquarium. Of course the colors of the fish there are spectacular.

Insider’s Tip: Book a full day to see the blue cave after you have booked the trip to Biševo Island as this is what paradise looks like. You will be able to view this incredible sight in a matter of minutes, and once the gorgeous sunlight glistens off the water, it truly is a beautiful sight to see!

Optional Experiences

Hvar After Dark If you like a good night out like me, you’ll love Hvar’s nightlife. Carpe Diem Beach Club is a must - dancing under the stars with your toes in the sand is a real treat!

Culture Vulture? Why not join a guided tour around Hvar Town? I did this on my second day and it was great! The guide took us up to Fortica Fortress - the views are amazing and I got some good pics for my Instagram!

Fun Fact: If you go in June or July you’ll see the lavender fields in full bloom. The smell is amazing! I couldn’t resist buying some lovely lavender goodies to take home - my flat still smells gorgeous!

Whether you want a peaceful sunbathe, some history or a proper night out these islands have it all. I’ve been to loads of places in Croatia but there’s something about Hvar and Vis that’s just little pieces of heaven!

Day 9-10: Dubrovnik's Architectural Marvels and Beyond

Wandering Through Dubrovnik’s Old Town: A Medieval Masterpiece

I’ll never forget my first view of Dubrovnik’s Old Town – it literally took my breath away! Dubrovnik is known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic” (and rightly so, if I do say so myself) and this place is like stepping into a fairytale. You’ll feel like you’ve gone back in time to medieval times the minute you walk through those gates.

Let me show you my favourite spots:

  • Those Walls: Right, you have to do this! I spent a great morning walking these ancient walls and I couldn’t stop taking photos. Every corner has another breathtaking view of terracotta roofs against the Adriatic. Pro tip: go early to beat the crowds and the heat – I learned this the hard way!
  • The Stradun: This is the place to be! I love grabbing a coffee at one of the street side cafes and people watching. The limestone pavement is so polished it shines – though be careful when it’s wet (I may have had a slightly embarrassing slip!).
  • Palaces: Have you seen the Sponza and Rector’s Palaces? They’re stunning! I spent ages looking at the stone work. The Rector’s Palace is particularly cool – imagine being the bloke who got to live there!
Dubrovnik CroatiaDubrovnik Croatia

Beyond the City Walls: Hidden Treasures

While Dubrovnik is great, there’s so much more to see nearby. Here are my favourite day trips:

  • Lovely Lokrum Island: Just a short boat ride from the old harbour, this little gem is perfect for getting out of the city. I had the best afternoon wandering through the botanical gardens and watching the peacocks strut about. There’s nothing like finding your own private beach among the rocks!
  • Popping over to Montenegro: Fancy popping over to another country? The Bay of Kotor is stunning – I couldn’t believe my eyes when I first saw those fjord-like views! The old town of Kotor is like a mini Dubrovnik, but with its own special charm. If you’re feeling energetic, climb up to the fortress – your legs may complain but the views are worth it!

Mount Srđ Cable Car (Optional)

Take in the views of Dubrovnik and the surrounding area with a ride up Mount Srđ by cable car.

  • Great Views: At 412 metres high you’ll see the best views of Dubrovnik’s Old Town and the Adriatic Sea. Perfect for photos and taking it all in.
  • Fort Imperial: At the top you’ll find Fort Imperial, an important building from Croatia’s fight for independence. You can visit the museum to learn more about this period in Croatian history.

You’ll see it all here. Old and beautiful. Streets and views.

Day 11-12: The Enchanting Coastal Towns of Istria

Rovinj Romance

I will always remember my first stroll in Rovinj as it was as if I was in a fairy tale! You know those Mediterranean towns as shown in post cards? Well, this Croatian gem on the coast takes it way cooler than that. Narrow streets made of cobblestones and a mass of flat roofed houses engrossed in striking colors are sure to win your heart.

My favourite spot? Let’s have the Church of St Euphemia on this one. I nearly lost my breath climbing up there as in and even got to witness some really breath taking views! But man oh man, was it worth it! The view of roofs rendered in fleshy hues of pink greeted my eyes, the hospitality of the botanical surroundings broke through my cynicism.

Rovinj CroatiaRovinj Croatia

Pula’s Roman Wonder: More Than Just Old Stones

Pula’s Roman amphitheatre, let me tell you, is a cracking spectacular! I still remember the first time I saw it, such a sight was in fact hard to imagine! Designed in the 1st century A.D., this gigantic figure is one of the largest Roman Amphitheatres ever constructed with a total of 6 such arenas present across the globe. And it is pretty cool right?

While inside, I couldn't help but envision the noise of the thousands of people watching as gladiators slaughtered each other for the fun of the show. These days it’s probably more likely to host a gig than a sword fight but it’s part of the attraction isn’t it? And while you are there take a stroll around the city as well, there are every so often Roman bits and bobs grand arches and temples.

Truffle Adventure: Istria

Now here’s something to get your mouth watering - Istria’s truffles! I went on a truffle hunt recently and it was brilliant. Imagine this - you’re walking through foggy forests with an expert and their clever dogs searching for these fancy mushrooms. It’s proper cool when they find one!

Best bit? Tasting them in local restaurants. I had this amazing pasta with freshly shaved truffles on top - bliss! If you’re a foodie like me you have to try it.

My Top Tips for Istria

  • Get a hire car - you’ll thank me later when you’re exploring those hidden villages
  • Book a boutique hotel in Rovinj (I found some real gems!)
  • Visit in spring or autumn - lovely weather and fewer tourists in your perfect Instagram shots
  • Check out the local festivals - the Batana Festival in Rovinj is a hoot

Whether you’re strolling through Rovinj’s cobbled streets or gawking at Pula’s ancient amphitheatre, Istria has got something up its sleeve. I’ve been all over Croatia but there’s just something about this region that keeps pulling me back. Give it a go and I think you’ll feel the same way too!

Practical Tips for Your Croatian Adventure

Here's how to make your Croatian trip run smoothly with these essential tips.

Transport

  • Car: Having a car to move around gives you the greatest flexibility in appreciating the varied nature of Croatia. The road system is in good condition, and you can find quiet spots far from the tourist areas. Also, remember to see if an International Driving Permit is required for you.
  • Public Buses: With a good number of buses in operation throughout the region, it will be easy to get to all important points in the country without delays. FlixtBus and Arriva have regular schedules. It's advisable to purchase your tickets in advance as a result of high demand during the summer period.
  • Ferries: The use of ferries is an integral part of discovering the islands. The main company is Jadrolinija and its vessels operate between the most popular islands – Hvar, Vis, Korčula and the mainland. Check the schedule in advance and buy tickets on the internet.

Currency

The Croatian Kuna (HRK) is the national currency. Credit and debit cards are commonly accepted in larger cities, but it's best to carry cash when visiting small towns and local markets. You'll find cash machines (ATMs) easily across Croatia.

When to Visit

  • Spring (April - June): Pleasant temperatures, quieter attractions, ideal for exploration and outdoor pursuits.
  • Summer (July - August): Peak holiday season with hot weather, perfect for beaches but busier and pricier.
  • Autumn (September - October): Mild weather, fewer visitors, brilliant for cultural sites and local events.
  • Winter (November - March): Quiet season, budget-friendly, great for city breaks without summer crowds.

What to Pack

For Activities:

  • Hiking: Sturdy boots, moisture-wicking clothes, sun hat, sun cream, water bottle. Good footwear is essential for national parks like Plitvice Lakes.
  • Swimming: Swimsuit, beach towels, flip-flops, snorkel kit, waterproof pouches. The Adriatic offers excellent swimming and water activities.
  • Essential Items: Light waterproof coat, plug adaptors (Type C & F), insurance paperwork, photocopies of important documents, basic medical supplies, insect spray for countryside visits.

Explore Croatia with This Amazing Itinerary

I’ll never forget the first time I walked the ancient walls of Dubrovnik - the Adriatic Sea sparkling out before me and the terracotta roofs a patchwork below. If you want a holiday that will give you proper pinch me moments, Croatia is your ticket. I’ve put together this itinerary based on my own travels but feel free to mix it up - some of my favourite memories were from the unplanned detours!

What’s so special about Croatia you ask? Well, imagine walking medieval streets in the morning, lounging on a beach in the afternoon and chatting with lovely locals over fresh seafood in the evening. From Dubrovnik’s Game of Thrones walls to Split’s cafes and the waterfalls of Plitvice Lakes, there’s something here for everyone (and I mean everyone!).

Before You Go: The Admin

Here’s something that caught me out at first - despite being in the EU, Croatia does its own thing with money. You’ll need Croatian Kuna (HRK) not euros and don’t forget your passport for border checks as they’re not in the Schengen zone yet.

Go! Pack in your comfiest shoes, your swimmers and your sense of adventure. Croatia will welcome you with open arms - and I promise you’ll love it!
