Did You Know You Can Experience Monaco in Just One Weekend?
Introduction
Haven’t you sometimes secretly wished you could just spend a weekend in Monaco? Well, I had this opportunity of visiting Monaco for one (too short) weekend and trust me, it was a unique experience.
Monaco, located on the Mediterranean coast, is famous for being quite a luxurious place. Though tiny and covering only 2.02 Square Kilometers area, the country has juiced every aspect of glamour and history possible. It attracts tourists because of its marvelous design, diverse history and active night life. From the historic Princes Palace through to the world famous Casino de Monte Carlo, there is one thing that is recurrent in every section of Monaco, and that is class.
However, given the fact that you have limited time, it would be best to plan your visit to facilitate the total enjoyment of the short trip. As there's a lot to see in such a small area, you will agree that by moving around and deciding what to focus on, I think you can make your weekend in Monaco an extra busy and enjoyable season. It does not matter whether you would want to go to some historical places, eat delicious food or just bask in the sun at Larvotto Beach, all the above activities can be done efficiently with a well structured schedule.
Do make sure that you are well rested as what is arranged for you next in this particular case is a special weekend in one of the most expensive places on earth, Monaco.
Day 1: Arrival and Exploring Monte Carlo
Morning: Arriving in Monaco
Let’s assume that you are going to begin from Nice, as I did. Nice – Monaco is one of the most fascinating and exciting travel transitions. There are a number of choices to be made, such, bus travel, train, and more fancy traveling by a helicopter or hescopter.
Bus
The bus option has its advantages as well as several disadvantages. The advantage is the finding of the price, it shall be no more than a couple of euros for a ride and it takes a pretty nice route along the coastal road. However, the demerits include being time consuming, for it takes about an hour to complete the journey, and, the buses would be overcrowded during peak hours.
Train
As for me, this is the option I choose to reach Monaco, although you should realize that travelling to Monaco by train has its pros and cons too. Well, this is a fast option. It takes about 20 minutes to get to Monaco, and there are regular services well spaced during the day. However, illustrative foreign scenery is limited from this route in contrast to more pictorial Bus tour, and one has to walk from the station to central Monte Carlo. I used Trainline and got my tickets easily, though pick the options that suit you the best.
Helicopter
The final option I wished to include (because why not) is the helicopter. The fastest transportation mode with the fastest flight lasting seven minutes and great aerial views of the blue waters of the French riviera has its own challenges too. It was, however, very pricey when compared to other means of transport and flights could be delayed because of unfavorable weather conditions.
Take note that the choice of the appropriate form of transport is very important to be able to enjoy your weekend in Monaco. Whether you are traveling by a very slow moving bus, a fast moving train or a luxurious bullet helicopter, there’s no doubt you will come in style.
Afternoon: The Sights of Monte Carlo
On the other hand, arriving in Monaco certainly gives you the whole afternoon on Day 1 to relax and see the sights of Monte Carlo. This is where I took in two key sites which I fully endorse, and which are the Prince’s Palace of Monaco and the Casino de Monte Carlo.
Prince’s Palace of Monaco Tour
The first thing that strikes one on visiting the Prince’s Palace of Monaco is that it resembles a very nice living history. The palace, which was built in 1191, represents not only fine architecture but also a historic site of Monacan culture. Residing on the Rock of Monaco, it has housed the Grimaldi family for more than 700 years, hence it is one place to include in your checklist during your stay in Monaco (For the record, the Grimaldi family has maintained power in Monaco for over 700 years making it one of the oldest dynasty in ruling countries. Centuries later, the Grimaldi’s have been the effective ruling family in Monaco and relevant to the country’s culture).
Piece of the Grimaldi Family Palace’s history inside the palace
As you navigate through the palace, you will learn the interesting history of the Grimaldi family and other great Monegasque families as well. There are interior state rooms exquisitely furnished with different styles of chronological period pieces and wonderful frescoed windows being housed here, which describes the depth of Monacan history and its relevance in today’s society.
Witnessing the Magnificent Grand Ceremony of Changing Guards
Most of my visit will be the watching of the changing of the guards ceremony. This very traditional affair takes place at 11:55 a.m. sharp and makes your day more pleasant. The skill, artistry and majesty of Les Carabiniers du Prince provide a glimpse into the socio-cultural aspects of the Monacan cultures and customs. You can read about that more here.
The Luxurious Glamour Monte Carlo Casino
After taking a tour of the Prince’s Palace of Monaco, I proceeded to another fantastic place, the Casino de Monte-Carlo. Entering this place is like entering an era of sufficiency and enervation. Constructed in 1863, this architectural gem was designed by Charles Garnier-a genius behind the Paris Opera House. The grandiose Belle Époque façade of the casino gives an introduction to its interior, which is truly opulent with marble floors, crystal chandeliers, and intricate frescoes adorning the ceilings. Yes, that can be read between the lines; I was impressed with the place.
Gambling is definitely not the only thing you will find in the casino. It is a metaphor for the association of Monte Carlo with the jet-set lifestyle. Famous for many movies, including James Bond's Casino Royale. This is also on the Grand Prix circuit, which provides more excitement during the race weekends. All these things, however, can be experienced only if you take a weekend in Monaco and therefore, include this historic place in your program.
Evening: What to Eat and Where to Go in Monte Carlo at Night
As it is in any other city, in Monte Carlo it is possible to enjoy a variety of entertainments and meal. I will now give you some highlights about some of my favourite places, but keep in mind that there are plenty of great places to eat and have fun.
Enjoying Mediterranean Delicacies at Le Louis XV
I absolutely must mention this restaurant. There is an elegance, one that is pure luxury, that overwhelms the senses, in Le Louis XV. Located in the Hotel de Paris in Monte Carlo, this Michelin star establishment is known for its great Mediterranean food with professional and attentive staff. As soon as I stepped through the main door of the restaurant, I understood this evening is going to be special.
The aura of the Louis XV is indescribably aristocratic. The warmth is present courtesy of the warming crystal chandeliers and the elegantly dressed tables are filled with delightful conversations jutting out from people gathering around them. When you have a look at the menu, you are more likely to remain hungrier because each item on it has been created by hands of chef Alain Ducasse, who knows what is best for you. The wine list at Louis XV is practically on a level with the food offered, there are a lot of wines that go without any effort, though not over the top with tastes, with each dish. The sommelier's advice was spot on and noticeably elevated the overall level of comfort during the meal.
Eating here cannot be reduced to a mere riddle. It is about experiencing every minute in a rich and historical setting. It is no wonder why this restaurant is worth and has made its way into the top restaurants of Monaco, it is worth going to anyone getting ready to have a weekend in Monaco and who wants to experience the best there is.
The Nightlife in Monte Carlo is Exciting and Undoubtedly Entertaining
After dinner, you may retire to your place for a properly deserved rest and happiness or, if you still have some energy left in you, then the night out in Monte-Carlo would not disappoint. Whether you enjoy opulent drinks or plentiful movement on the dance floors, the area provides all sorts of things. Allow me to recommend a few of those popular spots that I happened to visit and will not make you regret:
- Jimmy’z Monte-Carlo: the Royal Club is well-known for its glamorous parties visited by celebrities, and indeed it is the place where all the world elite comes to have fun. It features a floating summer bar and to top that there are resident DJs who will make sure that all your newest beats are on rotation.
- Buddha-Bar Monte-Carlo: An Asian cuisine with countless surprises for ears and eyes that shows that Buddha-Bar is more than just a restaurant. Its bright interior and exotic drinks are perfect for your pre-party.
- La Rascasse: At the legendary F1 turn La Rascasse plays live music, DJ sets in a low-key style. An excellent solution for everyone who wants to spend this evening more calmly.
More exciting are the exclusive events such as galas and showcases that take place over the weekends. Would you fancy visiting a ball in one of the grand hotels in Monaco or watching performers from abroad? Such events tend to attract the best of the best making your time in Monaco over the weekends absolutely out of this world.
Day 2: Culture and Relaxation in Monaco
Morning: Visiting the Museums and Gardens - Monacan Culture
After a tiring Day 1, it is time for Day 2! If I can suggest an activity for the morning, I would like to show you two places I like to go for relaxation. First of all, the Oceanographic Museum should be on your list, especially if you are a fan of ocean and sea life. This famous establishment remains one of the symbols of Jacques Cousteau, and despite being located on land it features a rather grand collection of marine exhibits. Consider witnessing such art as the observation of corals, touch demonstrations of strange fish or even sharks, including several outside in very tastefully designed aquariums. And for those of you who are passionate about neither art nor history, simply come here and look at the structure showcased below.
One of the things that can be appreciated about the museum is the stunning beauty of its architecture. This was the work of Charles Garnier (I already mentioned him earlier, remember?) the one behind the Opera House, Paris. The building takes your breath away with its beautiful architecture and more details which increases the interest in your visit. Walking throughout the public galleries of the museum, one can appreciate and feel fully how much effort was put in the design of such an informative, yet pleasant to look at space.
“The Oceanographic Museum not only offers information but amazes the audience with non-educational aspects as well as architectural masterpieces.”
This second place I wanted to talk about is the Jardin Exotique. This particular botanic garden is situated on a cliff side meaning that it has a view of the blue Mediterranean sea. As you walk through this green garden, one is able to appreciating cacti from Mexico, succulents thinned from Africa and other unique vegetation flourishing in this garden.
Some of the things to note are:
- Various kinds of plants: For instance, there are huge euphorbia, and aloes (I confess I had to google it to write these lines). But each of these plants has unique functions, due to being charged with atmospheres of hardiness.
- View to paradise: And this is not just the garden that was designed, but the views of Monaco and the Mediterranean sea too.
- Calm environment: It is such a good place to sit back and appreciate the surroundings.
Jardin Exotique is not only a garden. It is a tour that gives wonderful views interlinked with nature that tends to stay within you.
Both, these attractions, give an overdose of Monacan culture and nature appreciation. They emphasize how Monaco is serious about preserving its historical and ecological values, thus making you learn and be charmed at morning.
Afternoon: Taking it Easy at Larvotto Beach
Okay, okay, I have been walking you for a day and a half, no wonder I am the one who is wondering and asking myself when I will just focus and do nothing at all. Far from the bustling roads filled with tourists, after learning a lot of the rich culture of Monaco while visiting its museums and botanical gardens, it is time to have every beach lover's dream, sleeping at Larvotto Beach. The only public beach in Monaco with a mixture of rest and activity.
Larvotto Beach is one such beach that does not compromise on being quiet or active and colourful at the same time. The shore is sandy and the water is clear with many shades of blue making it ideal for an afternoon stroll. For those who wish to enjoy the sunshine courtesy of the Mediterranean, there are sunbeds ready for you. Nobody wants to get tired, but wants to be hungry either. That's why there are beach bars along the beach where cold drinks and light meals are sold.
Water Activities
Finally, for those who are restless and eager to dip in the water, laserrvot beach has few water activities that I want to recommend:
- Paddleboarding: Move over the surface of the water on a paddle board. What a fun way to take the beautiful sights while having a nice workout!
- Jet Skiing: In case you’re in need of some action, jet skiing is a good choice. Just imagine the wind in your hair while speeding on the surface of the water.
No matter if you are lying on a sunbed or indulging in exciting water activities, Larvotto Beach offers a great way to escape from the hustle and bustle of the rich and pomposity attractions of Monaco. Valuable time spent in here avoids disappointment on the out of town weekend in Monaco break as it incorporates the enhancement of culture and the good rest one deserves.
Evening: Monte Carlo Casino Experience
Hence, without any further delay, let’s move to the more exciting part of Monaco and that is its pompous Casino. Monte Carlo Casino which I boasted about at the beginning of this post, as the night comes down, get ready to be indulged in the elegance and excitement of the casino that bears its name. For any tourist who spends a weekend in Monaco, this place is certainly worth going.
1. Gambling and Luxury
On the very first day, I proposed going to see the Casino. But this time, I think it is really the time when you can relax a bit and have some fun rather just looking at the buildings. Embrace a different attitude and enter a region of sophistication with the chance of winning at assorted classical games such as roulette, holdem, and blackjack. Well, even if it is not your cup of tea, the opulence of the Belle Epoque casino architecture is certainly worthy of the trip. The opulent decor includes frescoes and crystals which showcase the extravagant life that Monaco offers.
2. Opera de Monte-Carlo
Artistic performances of world renown including opera and ballet can be watched at the Opera de Monte Carlo built in the same complex as the casino. Do check out the events and get one such ticket, complemented by stunning ambiance and breathtaking city views.
Such programs of activities, in the evening, successfully combine the elements of culture and entertainment and for a moment you forget that your weekend in Monaco will ever be boring.
Day 3: Scenic Views and Departure from Beautiful Principality
Yes I agree, a holiday usually ought to be two days long. But still are you looking forward to this weekend in Monaco? Why not stretch it by 24 hours and have some merriment in this remarkable city. Anyway, let’s see if there is anything you can do in the morning before going home.
Morning Hike to Tête de Chien
Picture this: it is morning in Monaco, and you can hear the sound of the water coming into the land. Yes, I admit I wasn't really awakened by the sound of the waves. However, the trek that I went on after that, was truly remarkable, and I can recommend it very highly. I'm going to take you for a morning hike to Tete de Chien, where breathtaking sweeping views of the principality are guaranteed.
Getting There
The trip from Monaco to La Turbie is short and is where you will find the Tête de Chien trail head waiting to be utilized. You can easily reach La Turbie via:
- Taxi: This is the fastest and most effective means of transport especially if you are anxious to go for the hike.
- Bus: This is cheap and beautiful as you are able to experience a little bit of the place.
Upon arrival in La Turbie, you will see directional posters towards the Tête de Chien trail. Get your hiking boots on because here comes some action!
The Hike
The actual trail is of moderate difficulty, however, at the same time really worth it – A brief overview of what lies ahead:
- Trail length: About 5 km round trip.
- Elevation gain: About 450 meters.
- Duration: About 2 hours maximum, on a slow but steady pace.
When you are on your way up, there will be a lot of green vegetation typical of the Mediterranean and sometimes you will see the blue sparkling waters of the sea as well. The path is quiet and constantly rises through stones which feel good and peaceful than other places.
As you reach the top of the Tête de Chien, prepare yourself to be knocked out by what you see. The lookout includes the best view of the entire city. It is not only a view that misses out sorely. It is also the excitement of being on the same promontory that has been cherished by many over the years – visitors who have stood there before.
“It is like you are king and ruler of the universe standing in this spot,” I tell myself, observing us from above Monaco’s splendor filling me with unbelievable calmness.
Tips for Your Hike
Further below are a number of suggestions you should observe to better your experience when hiking at Tête de Chien:
- Start Early: Start your hike earlier than usual normally in order to avoid a lot of daylight sun.
- Bring Water: Water is very crucial especially when climbing and should not be forgotten.
- Wear Appropriate Footwear: A little discretion will go a long way to wearing proper shoes.
- Pack a Camera: Since there are beautiful views, do not forget to carry a camera.
After enjoying great views of the sceneries along with taking many pictures, now it is time for us to go down to La Turbie. Trust me this beautiful morning activity will ensure that the last day in Monaco is full of numerous activities leaving memories that you will hold over the years.
Afternoon Leisure Activities Before Leaving This Beautiful Place
After an exhilarating morning hike to the Tête de Chien viewpoint, soaking in the breathtaking panoramic views over Monaco, it the time to take some rest. Here's some of the place I recommend to make the most of your afternoon:
1. Walk in the Fontvieille Park
If you are looking for a quiet place, this stunning park will do for a walk. It is situated in the area of Fontvieille, and it has:
- Rich vegetation and quiet ponds.
- Sculptures scattered throughout, adding an artistic touch.
- A charming rose garden with varieties named after members of the Grimaldi family.
2. Visit the Princess Grace Rose Garden
This garden developed in honor of Princess Grace is a lovely garden to stroll around looking at 4000 rosebushes. When you visit the garden, there are:
- A peaceful ambience complemented by neatly paved paths along the afflicted garden.
- Seating places to take time out and meditate about the journey.
- Labels accompanying members of every species describing the beautiful flowers.
3. Explore Local Boutiques
It is impossible to overlook the luxury shops of this country – Monaco seems to have only chic attire. However, quaint boutiques can also be found. Go to areas such as La Condamine especially for strange things like:
- Original jewelry showing exquisitely prepared and crafted by the connoisseurs.
- Designer clothes from the region.
- Specialty grocery items that are highly recommended as gifts.
4. Have a Café Experience
My last recommendation here is simply to have a seat in one of the lovely Monaco's cafés before you leave. Here are some really nice options:
- Café de Paris Monte-Carlo: It is recognized for its Belle Époque delectation and is located in a prime area near the Casino de Monte-Carlo.
- Brasserie de Monaco: Perfect by the port, it is a brewery serving up a range of artisan beers crafted on the premises.
“One can never leave Monte Carlo without sipping on an espresso & watching people pass by, such is the grandeur of Monte Carlo.”
Yes, you can enjoy such lazy customs and come back with beautiful pictures in your head from Monaco, which is what makes this weekend in Monaco so memorable.
Conclusion: One Exceptional Weekend Trip To Monaco!
My last words to you is that a weekend in Monaco can be described in these few words-a world full of elegance and thrill. The moment you set foot there, everything sparkles and intrigues you, such as the aristocratic ambience and the lively atmosphere. If you take a stroll along the grand halls of the Prince’s Palace, or a try at the Casino de Monte-Carlo, or bask in the sun at Larvotto beach, or any other such activity, every second is full of thrill and awe.
