Explore the Wonderful Islands of Lofoten: A Comprehensive Travel Guide

Introduction

Hey there, fellow adventurers! Today, I would love to introduce you to my favorite spot in Norway: The Lofoten Islands. I can guarantee it is unlike anything you have witnessed before. Those mountains that seem to leap into the Arctic waters are something I can never seem to stop talking about.

Let me explain what makes Lofoten Islands such an extraordinary place (and why my jaw dropped when I first visited):

This region offers one of those views which seem so impressive they appear to have been photoshopped. In Lofoten, that is just another Tuesday! This place is famous for its mountains crashing into the ocean, the fjords that surrounds them are so clear you can see the sea bed.

That's not everything, the mountains and fjords aren't the only reason you should visit this outstanding place. Are you a fan of hiking? With the breathtaking view of the fjords I almost collapsed on my first trail. If hiking isn't your thing, have you tried chasing the northern lights? Make sure you carry hot chocolate though, you will thank me for it later. Are you looking for more? How about some kayaking? There's something for everyone.

And that is only a portion of everything that makes this proud piece of art so precious.

When it comes to accommodation, here is my best suggestion: avoid chain hotels and instead book a stay at a Rorbu, which are rustic red fishing cabins that sit on stilts over the sea. After spending a night in one, I felt like a Norwegian fisherman (minus the actual fishing skills).

Are you prepared to plan your own Arctic adventure? We can ensure you have all the insider tips that help make your trip most memorable.

The Northern Lights and how to see them in all their glory

The Lofoten Islands are one of the best places in the world to see the Northern Lights, as you can see in the previous picture. From September to April the night sky is lit up with colours thanks to this natural phenomenon.

To increase your chances to see it:

  • Get away from the light pollution: choose a place far from artificial lights, such as a beach or a mountain summit.
  • Check the aurora forecast: there are several apps and websites that provide aurora forecasts. We recommend Norway Lights, very easy to use.
  • Be patient and prepared: the Northern Lights can appear at any time during the night. Dress warmly and bring a hot drink to make the waiting more fun.

Seeing the Northern Lights in the Lofoten Islands is an experience you won’t forget when you get back home.

The nature of the Lofoten Islands will surely charm you, whether you hike their trails or watch the night sky.
