How to Experience the Best of Menton Town in Just 3 Days

Let me tell you about Menton, a delightful find I discovered on the French Riviera. Hidden in the Alpes-Maritimes, this pleasant town blends French style with a touch of Italian influence - imagine a mix of pasta moreover baguettes.

This town was once part of Monaco until 1865 and it attracted elegant European nobles long ago. Who would not enjoy spending vacations where the climate remains pleasant year after year?

These are the parts I appreciate in Menton Town:

  • The Old Town features a network of unusual narrow streets and lanes - it's easy to get lost but it's still a pleasant walk
  • The beaches appear beautiful - ideal for resting with a book while watching the Mediterranean shine.
  • It's hard to imagine a garden more beautiful than this, full of peculiar tropical plants. It is as if you were in a tropical paradise.
  • Festivals are the highlight! People from all over come to this magnificent Lemon Festival (believe me!) and Classical Music Festival, which truly takes the cake.

Menton is nestled right between the sea and mountains, so it is no wonder that they boast about their unique subtropical microclimate, meaning the sun shines all year round. How great is that? No matter if you appreciate art, adore the nature or simply want to retreat to the Mediterranean, I believe Menton is waiting for you!

Day 1: Exploring Menton's Old Town and Cultural Attractions

Menton’s Old Town

Start your day by wandering through the charming streets of the Old Town. Narrow alleys, winding passages and stairways, the Old Town is a treasure trove of history and architecture. The Baroque buildings here are particularly impressive with their ornate facades and intricate details that tell the town’s story.

  • Baroque Buildings: Take your time to admire the Baroque architecture that dominates the Old Town. Many buildings date back to the 17th and 18th centuries with grand facades adorned with stucco, coloured shutters and wrought-iron balconies.
  • Place aux Herbes: This small square is the hub of activity in the morning. Local vendors set up stalls with fresh produce, flowers and artisanal goods. A great place to soak up the local culture and maybe pick up some souvenirs.
  • Place Saint-Michel: Another must-see is Place Saint-Michel. This square is dominated by the stunning Basilica of Saint-Michel Archange. The Basilica’s facade is a masterpiece of Baroque design with its intricate sculptures and tall bell tower. The square itself has panoramic views over the town and the Mediterranean.

And cafes are scattered throughout these squares to sit and relax with a coffee or light breakfast and take it all in. Popular cafes serve delicious pastries and have great views for people watching.

After your morning stroll, head to the coast and visit the Jean Cocteau Bastion Museum. Located in a 17th century fort overlooking the harbour, this museum is dedicated to Jean Cocteau, an artist who was deeply connected to Menton.

  • Events: If you visit at certain times of the year you might be able to catch an art exhibition or a performance at the museum. These events are often by contemporary artists inspired by Cocteau or celebrating his work through art.

And the museum itself is a beautiful building. Located on a bastion it has views over Menton’s coast so it’s an experience inside and out.
