The Ultimate Tenerife Travel Itinerary for Adventure Seekers
Discover the Ultimate Itinerary for Adventurers in Tenerife: A Week of Breathtaking Exploration
The island of Tenerife is the biggest one in the archipelago of Canary Islands and also has the greatest number of residents who are close to one million. While it is known for being one of the top touristic places during high season (which if you ask me is seldom a good thing), it possesses astounding qualities in terms of traveling in low season (December – February) and mid season (March-June and September – November). With a mild climate even in winter, an environment that will delight the most adventurous among you, and a calm and peaceful atmosphere for the rest. It is without doubt one of my favourite destinations.
The beauty of this island can be said to be on a whole new other level. This island is composed of fantastic volcanoes, golden sand beaches and green forests that all contribute to the availability of thrilling opportunities to every adventure lover.
Tenerife has it all in its offer from climbing the highest point in Spain Mount Teide, to diving into clear waters of Costa Adeje. Within few day one can enjoy the green rain forest of Anaga Rural Park and the awesome volcanic landscape of Teide National Park.
Besides the outdoor activities, you can indulge in delicious local cuisine in vibrant markets and rest on immaculate shores. Every minute spent on this island proves to be an experience worth fondly remembering.
After coming back to the island for the second time, I thought sharing tips with you in this extensive 7 day itinerary would help improve your vacation in Tenerife. This guide comprehensively will introduce people to wonderful fun-filled activities and real active immersing in the culture giving you a week that is full of wonders. Prepare yourself for being absolutely immersed in the beauty and spirit of the amazing island of Tenerife!
For people who prefer visual descriptions, I decided to put the main places of the proposed itinerary to Tenerife on this map.
Important links that might come handy during your Tenerife travel: Official tourism site of Spain and Official tourism site of Tenerife.
Day 1: Arrival in Tenerife and exploration of Santa Cruz
Arrival at Tenerife North Airport
In Tenerife, there are two airports, one to the north and the other to the south of the island. During my travels, I landed in the north. So I put forth an itinerary starting from that one, but in case you would rather touch down in the south, it is completely okay, just rearrange the steps you wish.
Arriving at the northern Airport of Tenerife, you can live in the busy city of Santa Cruz within just a couple of minutes by car which is also our first stop.
Before that, here are some practical tips:
Concerning transportation in Tenerife, is renting a car better than using public transport ?
Well, it depends! Public transport is of really good standards, is very reliable, comfortable, clean, and cheap (not to mention the more ecological aspect). However, they provide lesser degree of flexibility than a rented car. If the budget allows and desire is there to spare time on public transport then I would advise you to hire a car. And if you are like me on holiday, with time to spare(a bit adventurous), use the bus.
As for accommodation, I must mention that I decided to divide the accommodation for three different places during this trip in order to avoid long (yes, public transport does have some disadvantages) round trips. My first accommodation was in San Cristóbal de La Laguna. This is a good place to base yourself in on account of proximity to the airport and a luggage drop off point upon arrival. I will detail the positive aspects of San Cristóbal de La Laguna later however I do not recommend you stay in Santa Cruz. It surely is a nice city to spend a day in and quite a lot of activities are there for our first day but there are far more charming places.
Parque García Sanabria
First step: Parque García Sanabria. Since it is a green paradise, it is surely the perfect place to stretch your legs after a long flight. The park is filled with several lovely gardens and sculptures providing a respite of sanity in the urban chaos. Be sure to pay attention to the flower clock and other exceptional fountains spaced around.
Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África
Are you feeling hungry? Go to the Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África. This market is a visual delight as it offers it all. Local dishes like queso fresco (fresh cheese) and churros with chocolate should be sampled too. It is also the likely place to get souvenirs which include handmade jewelries and traditional Canarian pottery.
Tenerife Culture: Auditorio de Tenerife
End your first day of travel in Tenerife by going to the popular Auditorio de Tenerife. Its brilliant cone shape dominates the harbor and sea, and it was constructed by Santiago Calatrava, the Spanish architect. It is hard to remember having such an overwhelming structure even if you go there only to see the exterior.
From beautiful parks to lively markets and impressive architecture, Santa Cruz provides the perfect setting to start your adventure in Tenerife.
Day 2: Cultural Immersion in San Cristóbal de La Laguna and the Masca Valley
Visit to La Laguna
Have you ever visited a place and had the feeling you time traveled ? La Laguna, UNESCO’s World Heritage-listed site, is precisely that. This delightful town is well known due to the preservation of its colonial Era architecture and its modernity. During your walks on the cobbled streets, you will see numerous colorful buildings, old churches, and fun places. I didn’t randomly settle on it as the first place to stay during this trip to Tenerife, this town has a Latin American feel. This is a place that is adrift between Spain and the Americas and where the conquistadors took the key to their future structure from.
The town hall of La Laguna also offers free guided tours in several languages. I found them a bit short (you always want to see more in this city) but enriching. Here is the information and the phone number for this guided tour in Tenerife
Must-see places in La Laguna
- Plaza del Adelantado: A square of remarkable beauty surrounded by even more remarkable buildings.
- Catedral de San Cristóbal de La Laguna: A majestic cathedral with beautiful features and cozy interiors.
Exploring local markets and traditional Canarian dishes
In case you are starting to get a bit hungry you can visit the local markets and try out some of the traditional Canarian dishes. Have you ever tasted papas arrugadas or even more their mojo sauce? I so did on my trip. Many thanks to Juan, a local whose presence I enjoyed while there on the Island. He also pointed out something important which I have to share with you: lunchtime siesta is a big thing ! From 1pm to 5pm disturbingly like in the Spanish timetable the activities come to a halt. When you first arrive there, it can be a little unsettling for us who are used to never ever slowing down, but you will get used to it I promise !
Highlights of the market
- Mercado Municipal Nuestra Señora de África: A convenient and charming marketplace to experience fresh foods and buy unique souvenirs.
- Street food stalls: Offering everything from grilled meats to sweet pastries.
Where to stay in La Laguna?
I enjoyed my time at the La Laguna Gran Hotel and given its strategic location in the midst of mayoral activities, this modern yet classic hotel is able to provide grace in present day concerns. Very few people will argue that rooms are bright and stylishly furnished and overlooking the fascinating city. The personnel is rather kind and helpful, bringing a smile to one’s face even at the moment of checking in.
On the trip talking to people, names of hotels which would be more often mentioned alongside with the best reviews were the following ones:
- Hotel Nivaria: This place is famous with its marvelous restoration of colonial features of the building. The accommodations are comfortable and well fitted with amenities, complemented with Canarian accents. The restaurant within the hotel serves local dishes that are exquisite and enjoyed by tourists.
- Hotel Emblemático San Agustin: If it is a more personal and characteristic feeling for a hotel you are after than this is a perfect option. Which is located in a building from the 1700s, unique due to some remaining decorative parts from that period. The garden is an especially pleasant place to have breakfast, of quite good quality.
Continue to the Masca Valley
Have you ever imagined finding yourself in a postcard-worthy landscape? The Masca Valley will exceed your expectations. This valley, which is located in the Teno mountain ranges, is often likened to Machu Picchu because of the awesome view it provides; even though the valley is itself quite phenomenal, it has been well etched in tapestries of reports to be highlighted in your travel in Tenerife.
Best things to do in Tenerife
- Promenade of wonderful views : the curves hide the best plasces belonging to the reportage take to be them at all locations.
- Hiking trail : Adventure lovers would be thrilled to trek from the Masca village down to the sea, as the trail has some of the most dazzling scenic view along
Feel the history and the enchanting Nature of La Laguna and watch the opulent views of the Masca Valley. Both places guarantee memorable experiences which are filled with history, taste and sights.
Day 3: Discovering the hidden treasures of Anaga Rural Park
Are you ready to explore the lush greenery of Tenerife? Anaga Rural Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, is a haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers. With incredible ocean cliffs, thick forests and hidden paths here is like being in an other world.
How to get to Anaga Rural Park?
- By car, via the TF-113 road from La Laguna, then the TF-12 road that crosses the entire park.
- By bus, thanks to Tenerife's public transport, allowing easy access to the park from La Laguna (lines 076, 077, 273, 274, and 275).
Exploring Anaga Rural Park
Try to envisage yourself taking a walk in a thick forest where every possible hue of green has come alive. Well, this is what you shall encounter in Anaga for sure! This park is recognized for its rich flora, fauna and scenic views. While walking along its different routes, don’t forget to look up and explore some of the indigenous plants and animals that inhabit Tenerife only.
Hiking on the Sendero de los Sentidos
If you are like me, a modern-day Indiana Jones... (Well, I enjoy hiking... I'll leave the spiders and snakes to Harrison), there is one path that you definitely cannot overlook: Sendero de los Sentidos (Trail of the Senses).
This renowned trail offers:
- Stunning shots supposed to be taken at the edge of the cliff: Well in that case, when you went for the hike, do not forget to take the pictures, because there are going to be spectacular views of the entire coast. One is left breathless at the sight of the waves crashing against the almost vertical cliffs and nothing but seas for miles around.
- Rare plant life: Be ready to be astounded due to volcanic evergreen sub tropical and ancient laurel forest, some of the rare speciesamba endemic to Tenerife and trees draping in moss. It's as if you walked into a storybook.
- Interactive experience: The Trail of the Senses lives up to its name as it allows you to use all the senses. Touch the leaves, smell the flowers, and listen to the beautiful birds. It is an engaging experience that takes you nearer to nature.
If you would like more information about all the available hikes in Anaga (and elsewhere), I recommend checking out AllTrails.
The Anaga trails are well defined, however, it is advisable to be cautious as the trails are very steep and rocky. Bring along good quality hiking sandals and lots of water. Do not leave your camera behind - these moments are too enchanting to not be captured.
Going to the Anaga Rural Park is not purely hiking but finding yourself once again, and appreciating the stunning views that we all fell in love with in Tenerife. For those who like active tourism or who just want to hide from the crowd and relax in nature, Anaga will surprise you with something special.
Day 4: Thrilling Water Sports in Costa Adeje
Although I do not like staying in all-inclusive resorts during my holidays, I realize that a fair mix of adventure, culture and some rest makes a perfect holiday. Then I want to take it easy after all these culture and adventure ( I promise there will be more of that later)
Our itinerary in Tenerife leads us to resort towns and where else if not to Costa Adeje. Known for its beautiful beaches and exciting water sports activities, this part of the island offers a perfect opportunity for a day full of water sports.
Activities in Tenerife: Water Sports in Costa Adeje
On approach to Costa Adeje, rest assured that there are plenty of exhilarating water sports that will please all adrenaline seekers. But have you ever been on a jet ski? Just picture for a second you are on jet ski, actually riding on the Atlantic Ocean at wide open sea, wind blowing your hair away and wet salty mist splashing on your face. This is something else.
In the mood for something more daring? Parasailing is just the thing for you. Gliding through the air high above the water, delighting in the incredible views over the gorgeous coast of Tenerife. It places other feelings on another level.
Yes, I understand that I sold you on the theme of rest and right now I speak of jet skis and parasailing… Read on: I will convince you that I also know how to stop for a second and take a vacation.
Playa del Duque: A piece of paradise in your trip to Tenerife
After all these adrenalin filled rides, it's time to relax on the beach of Playa del Duque. It's a very picturesque beach with a fine golden shoreline and gentle waves. One can choose to either lie on the beach on a lounger, take a walk or swim in the sea.
Feel like you could use a little more of that? Seaside promenades are home to elegant boutiques and cafes where you are able to sample some of the region’s tasty treats or simply have a cool beverage and absorb the hustle and bustle of the place.
Tips for your adventure in Costa Adeje
- Safety first: This is a common warning given to every person going for water sports, follow all the safety regulations offered by marine activity providers.
- Advance booking recommended: Adventure activities like a joy ride on a jet ski or parasailing are bound to get booked out.
- Stay hydrated: The weather is usually hot hence, always carry water with you.
With regard to accommodations, I personally stayed at the Jardines de Nivaria hotel. It is a place that fills the perfect balance between comfort and classic sophistication where abundant greenery and a picturesque sea can be enjoyed. The orders are fulfilled to perfection and that is extraordinary of the facilities, thus one’s stay is not ordinary.
Besides, an assortment of hotels Costa Adeje such as all-inclusive resort hotels, self-catering properties, etc can also be found. As whatever place you may choose, do no forget to make the reservation in advance to catch the best offers and also to avoid the disappointment of not being able to get a room.
As Costa Adeje is a touristic beach resort, apart from having any problems finding the proper hotel that corresponds to your taste, a modern cuisine will not be an issue either. But then again, I still think that it is beneficial to ask the local population some things. They know things that even the best apps on the internet don't know.
Costa Adeje is a unique place, combining active leisure and an excellent beach vacation, and is considered the best part of the trip to Tenerife. Are you mentally prepared to have dazzling colorful fun filled with a good dose of both action and repose?
Day 5: Adventure awaits you in Teide National Park
After a relaxing day it is time to start the new quests ! Please wake up early and eat a good breakfast since the second day is meant entirely for the exploration of magnificent Teide National Park. In this exceptional site, which is included on the list of the World Heritage Sites of UNESCO, is gauged the highest Spanish mountain, the height of which reaches up to 3718 m, Mount Teide. Just consider how your day would begin when, instead of walls and curtains, you are met with endless views of dry, moon-like landscapes and rocky volcanic terrains.
Don't forget to put on your hiking shoes !
Morning: Ascent to La Rambleta
The first step of the agenda is to take the cable car to La Rambleta, located just below the summit at 3,555 meters. It is a ride worth taking since it has beautiful views that will make feel like you are floating above another world. On reaching the La Rambleta, one is greeted at a splendour of an array of geological features.
Noon: Hiking Adventures
The Teide National Park offers numerous trails appropriate for any hiker :
- Roques de García Trail: This trail provides a moderate hike with wonderful rock formations such as Los Roques de Garcia. These interesting configurations have been eroded over the years and made soft in shape by the wind over the years.
- Montaña Blanca Trail: Montaña Blanca is for those who wish to have a tougher hike. It is beneficial and worth it as it leads to other-worldly views of revealing volcanic terrains..
Both trails give every chance to notice and appreciate some plants and animals inhabiting the volcanic landscape.
Afternoon: Picnic and Reflection
Sociable individuals might find it rewarding to take a long break after a long pleasant walk to let the muscles relax. Some foodstuff such as Spanish delicacies that you may have bought at Mercado de Nuestra Senora de Africa, Santa Cruz might be good ideas. Picture over lunch in the stunning Teide National Park, these pictures are some of the easiest ones to live with.
As the day comes to an end, take a moment to reflect on the natural wonders you have observed. You may also run into native animals of the regions or some other fellow hikers who are considering the same gorgeous premises.
Teide is not only a key point of my itinerary in Tenerife, it is pure enjoyment that does not end when you leave. After that thrill, the last two days will be more of rest with a little bit of culture coming in.
Day 6: Visit Garachico
Garachico, located in Tenerife’s northern region, is a beautiful town that is well preserved. It was the island's main seaport until part of it was destroyed during a volcanic eruption early in the 18th century. The place is today some tourist's favorite for its cobblestones streets, ancient structures, and natural swimming pools.
Here is the place where I will take out my items from the bag for the very last time. I was in El Patio hotel and the place is very nice and has good staff. There are not many hotels in Garachico as compared to Costa Adeje and they are a little bit expensive as well, however, you may search the neighboring places and particularly Puerto de la Cruz, which we are going to visit tomorrow.
Historical Exploration of Garachico
Grapple the start of the day strolling across the stone paved streets of Garachico town. Head to Castillo De San Miguel, a fortress from the 16th century providing excellent ocean views. Then go to the Santa Ana church built with beautiful Canarian colonial architecture.
Where to eat in Garachico?
For the midday meal, if you wish to try local food, I suggest the Candelaria La Cocinera. This family-run establishment offers authentic Canarian cuisine. Extraordinary hospitality, fresh authentic dishes... A real treat!
Activity in Tenerife: natural pools of Garachico
Devote a part of the day to the natural pools garachico flows into which according to their design are caused by the lava coming out from the erupting volcano. These pools offer a good occasion for swimming as they are unusual and filled with crystal-clear waters and rocks.
Make an evening walk along the ocean’s edge before admiring a magnificent sunset from one of the terraces overlooking the ocean. The serenity and the nature of Garachico will truly provide you with long lasting impressions. Garachico is the most proper place to tegether get acquainted with the inalienable historical and natural resource of Tenerife and have a refreshing time as well.
Day 7: Relaxation and Well-being in Puerto de la Cruz
After active days of fun, Puerto de la Cruz is the great place for rest. This lovely town surrounded by the sea is well known for its beautiful botanical gardens and amazing volcanic seashores. For those who are seeking leisure vacations, this place is perfect for you.
Best Places to Relax in Puerto de la Cruz
Botanical Gardens (Jardín Botánico)
There is one of the best and more beautiful botanical gardens in Puerto de la Cruz on the island of Tenerife. The Jardin Botanico was established in 18th century, and houses a rich collection of tropical and subtropical plants of different parts of the world. Wandering on its peaceful paths, one cannot miss the chance to enjoy the exotic blooms and loggerhead’s peacefulness.
Volcanic Beaches
The black sandy volcanic beaches of the city provide a wonderful experience. The canarian architect Cesar Manrique designed Playa Jardin and it stands out among the best. It combines beautifully landscaped gardens with stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean, providing a picturesque setting to relax and enjoy the sun.
Lago Martiánez - A Must-See
When you ask which attraction should be on your “to-do” list, I would recommend a special highlight which is Lago Martiánez. This wonderful land area is an artificial lake and is the work of the renowned architect Cesar Manrique where nature and modernity converge. This is what you should expect:
- Pools: The complex possesses a number of saltwater pools with sunbathing areas where you can take pleasure in the soaking sun of the warm island.
- Sculptures and Art: Art could be endorsed as a Manrique’s touch in more than one plan, it laid everywhere in form of sculptures and art pieces in all parts of Lago Martiánez.
- Dining Options: There are several places of interest including restaurants and open air bars, where you can try delicacies as well as cocktails.
You can spend the day at Lago Martiánez and hide away from the sun’s rays without losing the inspiration and the beauty of Tenerife’s sights.
Other Activities
Should you wish to go on a little further, the town streets which are dressed up shop, cafes, and restaurants would not disappoint you. If you are in the region and want to eat some fish, the local fish markets are worth checking out.
I trust you have the same relaxing day in Puerto de la Cruz that I had. What with the gorgeous botanic garden, volcanic stony beaches and picturesque postcard like views, this is certainly one of the high points of the week.
My Opinion on Tenerife
Tenerife is a location, which seems to have it all; Offering those looking for sun on a stunning beach as well as magnificent volcanic mountains. Culture, art galleries and great cuisines are also available on the island.
Travelers looking for peace and quiet or excitement in all the activities offered in Tenerife will find both in this gorgeous island. It has also been noted that the sun shines all year round which can be great to those escaping winter cold.
There may not be best in everything, for example the mass tourism and the disparity between the north and southern part of the island, nevertheless, a visit to Tenerife would surely dazzle you with its natural scenery, its abundant culture and the things you could do whether active or just resting. I feel that you should consider putting this island on your next travelling list.
Conclusion - Embrace the Spirit of Adventure in Tenerife!
Are you looking forward to cutting loose and exploring? These trips to Tenerife are not just a delight, but a number of experiences that span from the tranquil to the spine-tingling adventures. My 7 days itinerary is only a fraction of what can be experienced. Mountain Climbing - from Mount Teide down to greener Anaga Rural Park – nothing stays the same forever and there is always something to look forward to.
Don't forget:
- Hidden treasures: Wherever you start, this is not the end, for there is still a lot more to explore.
- Be bold: Whether it's trying a new water sport or hiking on a challenging trail, push your limits and create unforgettable memories.
- Keep your curiosity: The diverse landscapes of the island and its vibrant culture make every visit unique.
