1. Discovering the Vosges: a nature gem

The Vosges in summer is a gift of nature, and the diversity of its landscapes enchants every amateur of nature. With the great mountain landscapes, dense forests, and green valleys, I can tell you that every corner of the Vosges is an incredible place to see.

Varied Landscapes: Vosges Natural Parks

  • Mountains and hills: Hohneck or Ballon d’Alsace are some of the highest points in the Vosges, and offer some truly incredible views.
  • Lakes and rivers: Lakes like Gérardmer and Blanc make the scenery richer because of how calm they are. These lakes are great for a multitude of things, such as water activities, or just lying on the beach for relaxation.
  • Forests and meadows: The endless coniferous forests and flower-covered meadows also boast a high level of natural biodiversity, giving people (and you) the chance to enjoy beautiful walks in this region.
DidnDidn't I tell you that the lakes of the Vosges are absolutely mesmerising?

Summer Climate

The summer climate in the Vosges is generally pleasant, with moderate temperatures that make outdoor activities particularly enjoyable. From my point of view, sunny days allow you to fully enjoy hiking, picnicking, and swimming, while still being breathable. Cooler evenings are perfect for relaxing around a campfire or discovering cosy villages under a starry sky.

Richness of biodiversity

I think it's kind of obvious, but the region is a true sanctuary for local biodiversity:

  • Flora: Rare plant species such as purple foxglove or arnica montana can be observed in their natural habitat (I admit I had to Google it, but I hope plant lovers will appreciate the effort).
  • Fauna: The Vosges is also home to some surprises of a more natural kind, including a variety of exotic fauna: lynx, deer and many other species of migratory birds. I didn't get to see any Lynx during my stays, so I'll be pretty bummed if you find one.

Hikers can take advantage of this natural treasure through the numerous marked trails that traverse the mountains and forests. Even if you have no sense of direction and Google Maps is your best friend most of the time, I promise you that you can't get lost on trails like these.

Water Activities at Lake Gérardmer

Lake Gérardmer is perhaps the best-known and most popular attraction in this part of the region. Situated in the heart of an exceptional natural setting (believe me when I say 'exceptional'), this crystal-clear lake offers a multitude of water activities that will delight both young and old.

Available Water Activities

  • Paddleboarding: One of the best ways to appreciate the nature around you is to be on a paddle-board and paddle the calm waters of the lake. Everyone including novices and specialists in paddle-boarding can have the same happiness (as you must admit, it's quite fun to do).
  • Fishing: The same can be said for people fond of fishing at the Lake Gérardmer. With an abundance of fish such as trout and pike, I personally think that it's an ideal spot to spend a peaceful day by the water.
  • Sailing and Windsurfing: The lake also becomes a perfect playground for the sailing fanatics. There are specialised schools which have courses for various levels. Hence everyone can either learn or perfect their skills.
  • Canoeing and Kayaking: For those who prefer a more dynamic activity, canoeing and kayaking provide a playful way to explore the corners of the lake while having fun with family or friends.
Lake Gérardmer is not just about the lake. I mean, look at that view.Lake Gérardmer is not just about the lake. I mean, look at that view.

Events around the Lake in Summer

Lake Gérardmer is not only a place for water activities. In the Vosges in summer, you should know that it becomes quite the center of celebrations and cultural activities in the Vosges region:

  • International Triathlon of Gérardmer: This major sporting event attracts athletes from all over the world every year. I was really impressed by the unique atmosphere that reigns around the lake during this competition, with stands, entertainment and enthusiastic crowds.
  • Summer Festival: The edges of the lake are also decorated during summer with platforms, artistic fairs, and several performances throughout the summer season. It's a wonderful time to experience the local way of life !

All in all, Lake Gérardmer is a must-visit for those who want to experience a summer full of activities and discoveries in the Vosges (and who doesn't?).

3. Exploring the Vosges with Hiking and Nature

All this information and I still haven't mentioned one obvious thing to do: hiking. Put on your hiking shoes, grab your backpack, and get ready to explore the vast network of trails that wind through the Vosges. This region is a true paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, with marked paths suitable for all levels.

Trail Network in the Vosges

The Vosges offers a multitude of marked trails, ideal for exploring all the natural beauty here. Whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned mountaineer who's conquered every summit, you're sure to find the route that's right for you.

  • Sentier des Roches: This trail is well known for its beautiful views and beautiful, rocky sections. Ideal for those seeking an exciting adventure.
  • Lac Blanc au Hohneck: It is a roundabout trail that crosses through various valleys covered with dense forests and alpine meadows.
  • Tour du Ballon d'Alsace: It's panoramic loop offering breathtaking views of the valley and the mountains encircling it.

Recommended Routes for Beginner and Experienced Hikers

For those who have never hiked before and wish to try it out, there are relatively shorter and low-level technical routes that are also appropriate:

  • Fort du Parmont Hike: This is a two-hour hike that is quite easy, as it takes you to the historic Fort du Parmont. The route is simply marked and it has a great view of the valley.
  • Trail of the Waterfalls: This easy hike is ideal for kids and it runs past several beautiful falls including Tendon waterfall.

And experienced hikers, I haven't forgotten you! You will have no difficulty embarking on more complex expeditions:

  • Crete Crossing: An epic journey on foot through the Vosges mountains, lasting several days. Prepare for some needlessly stunning sights.
  • The GR5: This is one of the most well-known international guided hiking routes that leads through the Vosges, from the north to the south. It is suitable for those who like long walks in the woods and, obviously, who are in good physical condition.

Besides being a form of exercise, hiking in the Vosges means being able to enjoy the diversity of the area’s fauna with the possibility of seeing chamois, lynx or even black storks. So, are you up for an adventure?

Picturesque Villages and Local Culture in the Vosges

The Vosges region is perfect for photos, and boasts many villages that could have been cut out of a painted canvas. Among my favourite places, there is La Bresse, for example, which stands out for its typical Alpine wooden houses and breathtaking Alpine scenery. The narrow cobbled streets and half-timbered buildings of Remiremont is also a nice place.

Characteristics of Picturesque Villages

What I find really interesting and is very important is that each village has its own charm:

  • La Bresse: Known for its outdoor activities with great mountains to look at.
  • Remiremont: Its medieval markets and historical buildings attract history enthusiasts.
  • Gérardmer: Located on the beach at the edge of a lake with the same name (which I think you will have realised is Lake Gérardmer), is perfect for water sports and hiking.

From my point of view, the authenticity of these villages is partly due to local events such as folk festivals and craft fairs.

Importance of Local Markets in the Touristic Experience

Local markets play a central role in the community life of the Vosges. They allow you to discover:

  • Regional products: You'll find regional cheese such as Munster-Géromé, artisanal charcuterie, mountain honey.
  • Artisan crafts: Carved wooden objects, local pottery, and traditional textiles.
  • Friendly atmosphere: The markets are also gathering points where the local people narrate their stories and traditions to visitors. I always say that a good trip is also about the people you meet along the way!

If you are in Remiremont, do not miss the weekly market that is famous for the assorted fresh and artisan products. You will also find local restaurants, where you can taste their specialties such as blueberry tart and sauerkraut.

Venturing in these small villages is absolutely the best practice to connect with local people. Be it a historian, a foodie, or a simple traveller, you'll find what you are looking for in these villages.
