Visit Lake Como: Explore the Natural Beauty of Italy
Introduction
Is there anything more typical of Italy than Lake Como? Probably not. The lake, which lies in the Italian Prealps, is absolutely breathtaking in every sense and draws attention from all over the world due to its beautiful and calm surroundings.
But you may ask what actually makes Lake Como one's have to see destination in the first place? For this, try creating a picture of you being on complete water land, impressive mountains with pretty little villages nestled in the valleys and hillsides. Sounds good, right? Every corner of this lake had something magnificent, and the view was something that left me speechless.
Highlights:
- Breathtaking views: The lake is surrounded by green peaks that are even more beautiful when reflected in the turquoise water. It's truly impressive, believe me.
- Beautiful towns: Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio... there are so many beautiful towns that have lovely sceneries and nice attractions.
- History and culture: The magnificent Lake Como is surrounded by splendid villas, including Villa Balbianello (which I will talk about next) and Villa Carlotta, which bear witness to the glorious history of luxury living.
A journey to Lake Como is, from my point of view, more than just an escape. It is an immersion into the beautiful environment and the history of Italia. So I hope you're ready to join me in enjoying what this magical place has to offer.
1. Exploration of the Colourful Villages of Lake Como
Let's start by discovering some of the villages around Lake Como that are sure to catch your eye.
1.1 Bellagio: the Pearl of Lake Como
There is a reason why Bellagio is famously called the pearl of Lake Como. This charming hamlet strikes the perfect balance between the enchanting beauty of nature and the ancient structures. You will get to see:
- Picturesque alleyways: Discover the narrow and cobblestone streets filled with art galleries and quaint cafés.
- Lush gardens: It is essential for you to visit the gardens of Villa Melzi. These Italian gardens with their beautiful sculptures and rare plants highlight the beauty of the lake.
- Lakeside promenade: Along the banks, you can admire the panoramic views in a relaxing atmosphere.
1.2 Varenna Menaggio: a hidden treasure
Another settlement that I found beautiful is Varenna, which is quite peaceful and a bit less populated compared to Bellagio. You will find:
- Medieval old town: The medieval remains are vividly illustrated by their preserved architecture. The maze of streets and ancient buildings create an astonishing atmosphere.
- Lively lakeside promenade: The promenade along the lake is perfect for a leisurely walk, and you can enjoy the beautiful waters under the sun.
- Villa Mylius Vigoni: Everyone must see this wonderful example of neoclassical style of architecture. The gardens around it are also delightful and are ideal for a quiet walk.
1.3 Lenno: between nature and culture
The third place that I want to talk about is known as Lenno, and is a perfect blend and balance of natural beauty and cultural beauty. Its main features:
- Picturesque beach: You should relax on the beach of Lenno. This is an ideal spot for swimming or simply enjoying the sun (watch out for sunburn!).
- Roman ruins: The fascinating ruins of the Roman villa at Bagni di Lucca are also worth exploring.
- Villa Balbianello: This attractive villa is worth seeing as it has appeared in numerous blockbusters including Casino Royale and Star Wars (as a big fan, I was forced to say it). Try taking a guided tour of this villa, you'll learn a lot!
Each village around Lake Como has an appealing charm that is entirely different from the rest. I think that there are ideal places for those who are fond of history, nature, or simply need to have a rest at such villages.
2. Architectural Treasures: The Magnificent Villas and Gardens of Lake Como
Lining the shores in Lake Como are some of the oldest and most stunning villas that I've ever seen, all of which reflect the grand wealth and sophistication of a certain period. Certain of these historical homes, which are today open to the public, contain a rich cultural and artistic aspect of the region’s development. I've already told you about some of them, but let me add some details.
2.1 Villa Balbianello: A Masterpiece by the Water
As I've said earlier, nestled on a wooded peninsula in Lenno, Villa Balbianello is undoubtedly one of the best examples from the 18th century. The terraced gardens of this attractive villa offer panoramic views of the lake, hills and mountain ranges.
- Terraced Gardens: Sculptures and exotic plants are laid out in these gardens which also offer excellent views of the lake and surrounding peaks.
- Luxurious Interior: Significant works of art and antique pieces of furniture are used to decorate the structure. Each room tells a different story, enriched by the art collections and expedition mementos of Guido Monzino (a famous explorer and the last private owner, for your information).
To visit Villa Balbianello, you can opt for a guided tour that will allow you to explore every corner of this architectural treasure in depth. As I've said earlier that I'm a big Star Wars fan, I'm going to repeat that several Hollywood productions (such as Star Wars and Casino Royale), which used the bright rooms of the villa as a background, were filmed here.
2.2 Villa Carlotta: Where Art Meets Nature
Located in Tremezzo, Villa Carlotta is another attraction worth visiting on Lake Como. Known for its exquisite art collections and glorious botanical gardens, this estate dates back to the 17th century.
- Botanical Gardens: The gardens extend over more than 70,000 m² and are filled with an extremely big quantity of peculiar and interesting plants. Whether you love rhododendrons, azaleas, or camellias (I must confess, I needed to google these), here is where the real botanical paradise is.
- Art: Inside the villa, one can find the masterpiece works of famous artists like Canova and Hayez. The villa also occasionally hosts temporary exhibitions.
I can assure you that taking a stroll through these picturesque gardens is an experience that you will cherish for life, with the combination of art and nature. There's even a cafe on site where you can sit back and enjoy the surroundings.
For me, the villas and gardens of Lake Como are not just places to visit, they are living testimonies to an era when refinement and grace reached unparalleled heights. The history and beauty of these places can not only be admired, as it is also possible to learn the incredible stories hidden inside.
3. An Unforgettable Getaway: A Day Trip from Milan
How can I write a blog about Lake Como with talking about Milan? A day trip from Milan is an excellent option for tourists wishing to discover Lake Como without leaving the metropolis. Only 45 km north of Milan, Lake Como is only a short train ride away hence a good place for a fast retreat.
How to Get to Lake Como by Train from Milan
The train is one of the most pleasant and efficient ways of getting from Milan to Lake Como. They regularly run to the several stations around the Lake, with Milano Centrale station as the starting point. Here are some options:
- Milan to Como: A direct train to Como Lago is enough to take you there in around an hour. Once there, you can begin the sightseeing on foot or take a boat to the nearby towns.
- Milan to Varenna: There is a train that goes to Varenna-Esino if you need to see the other side of the lake. The journey takes about an hour and fifteen minutes.
- Milan to Lecco: This is for those who prefer to explore the southeastern part of the lake, and trains to Lecco usually take less than an hour.
Recommended Itinerary for a Full Day
I've been there twice, the second time to make up for the mistake I made on my first itinerary. So I can tell you what I think is best. You could start your adventure with one of the following itineraries, depending on your preferences.

Afternoon in Menaggio
- You can walk around this lovely little town, and I assure that you will have some breathtaking sights.
- For trekking enthusiasts, opt for a hike to the nearby refuge, from where you can admire the spectacular scenery of the lake.
Practical Tips
- Train Tickets: If you want to buy your tickets ahead of time (which I think you should do), go to the Trenitalia website or buy them directly at the station.
- Ferry Schedules: Check the schedules online to plan your trips between the villages.
- Comfortable Clothing: Bring along appropriate footwear in order to minimise foot travelling (I'm telling you this from experience...).
I believe you will share my view that a Lake Como day excursion from Milan has the perfect combination of culture, nature, and relaxation that will allow you and me to enjoy the wonders of Italy to the fullest.
4. Where to Stay: The Best Accommodations around Lake Como
My Selection of Quality Accommodations near the Lake
Lake Como is considered a destination amidst a fairy tale, and where you stay can add so much to making the trip even more magnificent. Ranging from 5-star hotels along the lake to beautifully admired villas in towns nearby, I assure you that this place will have something in store for everyone.
Luxury Hotels along the Lake
If you're the kind of person who wants to be pampered, Lake Como has its fair share of super luxurious hotels with an assurance of ultimate comfort and spectacular scenery.
- Grand Hotel Tremezzo: In Tremezzo, this handsome hotel complex is said to offer the best view of Bellagio and its nearby mountains. It has three outdoor swimming pools, an ultra-luxurious spa, and a number of upscale restaurants.
- Villa d'Este: This magnificent former villa that has been converted into a hotel is located in the town of Cernobbio. I really like it as it is a nice place where the lush gardens, tastefully designed rooms and warm hospitality can be ideal for a couples retreat.
- Il Sereno Lago di Como: This modern design hotel offers large, open, furnished suites with sliding doors to balconies overlooking the lake. The Michelin-starred restaurant also boasts stunning views (and don't miss the pool).
Charming Holiday Rentals in the Surrounding Villages
For a more local and personal option, holiday rentals are available in the beautiful villages around the lake.
- Bellagio: As I said earlier, Bellagio is aptly nicknamed the pearl of the lake, and offers a plethora of rental options, from cosy flats to graceful villas. During your stay you can have fun exploring the beautiful narrow paths, artisan shops and local restaurants.
- Varenna: This quiet village is perfect for visitors looking to unwind (and who doesn't?). Rentals range from an old traditional house to a new apartment with views of the lake.
- Menaggio: Ideal for active people, with accommodation close to outdoor activities, adventures and a golf course. You'll find a wide range of accommodation, from old fruit orchards to new apartment blocks.
Recommended Accommodations
And if that is not enough, here are some of my favourite suggestions to make your choice even easier:
- Hotel Metropole Suisse: Comfortable with a good budget, right in the heart of Como, and with a view of the lake.
- Albergo Terminus Hotel: A cozy historical hotel with vintage atmosphere, great for those who want to stay in the heart of the action and relax at the same time.

5. Practical Tips for an Unforgettable Visit to Lake Como
Essential Information for Planning Your Trip
Going for a vacation in Lake Como comes with a few ground rules that should be followed. Here are some tips that I think you will need for the entire trip.
The best time of year to explore the lake and its surroundings
The breathtaking beauty of Lake Como does not diminish with the passing months and seasons. But you should know that the beauty of each season is different:
- Spring (March to May): There is warmer weather, flowers filling the gardens, and mid size amount of people around. This is perfect for peaceful strolls and cultural visits.
- Summer (June to August): The weather is hot and sunny so you can indulge in water activities and beaches. But you should also know that it is also the most crowded period with tourists...
- Autumn (September to November): It's still warm, but the blazing sun has disappeared. Autumn brings many colours to the sites, and fewer tourists.
- Winter (December to February): Less crowded, the lake is relatively quiet. Although some attractions may be off-limits, it is the best time for a rather restful retreat.
Navigating the Waters: Boat Transport Guide
One romantic and interesting method of discovering Lake Como is by boat. Here’s what I think you need to know:
Types of Boats:
- Public boats: They regularly serve the main towns of the lake such as Bellagio, Varenna, and Menaggio. Perfect for easy and economical transportation.
- Ferries: Ideal for transporting not only passengers but also vehicles from one side of the waters to another.
- Private boats: Offer a more exclusive experience with the possibility of renting a boat, with or without a skipper.
Schedules:
- Public boat services operate frequently during the high season (spring to autumn). In winter, schedules may (obviously) be reduced.
- It is best to verify the schedules on the internet or on the boards at the tourist centers prior to traveling.
Tickets:
- Tickets can be purchased directly on the platforms or online. For those planning several journeys, day passes are available, offering maximum flexibility.
Sailing on the lake allows you to admire the spectacular scenery from the water, while providing easy access to the charming villages that line its shores.
With these practical tips, you're good to go on your exciting adventure to Lake Como. Now, take off and have the time of your life in this popular Italian destination!
