- Take a walk on the picturesque shops located along the street Alter Markt.
- The highlight of this visit would certainly be the sumptuous salons in the Salzburg Residence.
Day 2: Nature and Culture in Salzburg
- Go up to hohensalzburg fortress which has an interesting military history.
- Walk in the relaxing Mirabell Garden which offers stunning views of the cathedral and the fortress.
So, are you ready to go or not? Let's explore this wonderful experience in Salzburg together!
Day 1: Walking Through the Old Town
Let's start with a busy day 1! Salzburg and more especially the old town is the place to be to have a real feel of history with its stunning architecture and cobblestone streets. You only have to enter this old town to get the impression that everyone has gone back in time. I'm going to give you some of the major highlights that you will want to visit on your first day in this beautiful city of Salzburg.
What to Do in Salzburg: The Highlights
Mozart Statue at Mozartplatz and its Cultural Importance
There is no way you can visit Salzburg in 2 days without paying homage to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the famous composer born in this town in 1756. The Mozarts statue finds its place in one of the most attractive squares, Mozartplatz. Built in 1842, this statue receives countless visitors every year (and maybe you soon). Not only does it represent Mozart's phenomenal genius, it also embellishes the city of Salzburg, which has played an important role in the world of classical music.
Did you know? It is situated close to the house where Mozart was born, on Getreidegasse, a street rich in tales and beautiful shops.
Giant Chessboard at Kapitelplatz: a Unique Attraction in Salzburg
A few steps away, on Kapitelplatz, you will find a rather unusual attraction: a giant chessboard. This playful space appeals to chess enthusiasts as well as the curious. Have you ever pictured yourself moving chess pieces as tall as yourself! I think it’s a kind of experience that adds some originality to your visit.
Practical tip: Look at the surrounding area from Kapitelplatz, one can never have enough of the Hohensalzburg Fortress.
Leisurely Walk along Alter Markt and its Wonderful Shops
If you want an authentic experience of the city of Salzburg, then you should walk along Alter Markt Street. There are many artisanal shops, fabulous cafes and historic signs along this wonderful street. Visit Café Tomaselli, one of the oldest cafes in Europe, where even Mozart could be seen enjoying a cup of coffee, and indulge in a gourmet break.
Gourmet tip: Don't miss the local specialities such as delicious cakes and pastries available in the surrounding pastry shops.
Salzburg Residence
This first day of the visit should also be an opportunity to devote all the necessary attention to the Salzburg residence.
History and architecture of the residence
This former residence of the prince-archbishops is an architectural masterpiece that is a reminder of Salzburg's rich historical past. Built in the 13th century and remodelled several times over the centuries, it harmoniously combines different architectural styles.
Particularly impressive are the ceremonial rooms. Used for very important official meetings and other events, these rooms are embellished with magnificent paintings depicting clear visions of the power and magnificence of the prince-archbishops.
Galeries with European art collection from the 16th to the 19th century
Finally, do not forget to visit the art gallery as well. You'll discover an exceptional collection of European works from the 16th to the 19th century. A true artistic journey through the ages.
So the first day of your Salzburg itinerary ends on an enriching cultural note, which (I hope) will make you want to discover even more on the second day in Salzburg.
Day 2: nature and culture in Salzburg
Hohensalzburg Fortress
After a busy first day, don't worry, I've still got a lot for you! First, allow me to take you to the Hohensalzburg Fortress, the jewel of Salzburg. Built in 1077, this fortress is one of the largest in terms of overall area and preservation than any other of Central Europe. With its rich history and strategic role, it can truly not be missed by any touristic.
History and Military Importance
You should know that:
- It was constructed during the reign of Archbishop Gebhard in the period of the Investiture Controversy.
- It was also used as a residence for the prince-archbishops and for protection in case of hostilities.
- The thick stone walls and strong towers illustrate quite clearly its defensive purpose.
Convenient Access via the Funicular
Even more things to know:
- The Hohensalzburg funicular, which was opened to the public in 1892, bridges the city and the citadel.
- The ride lasts for only a few minutes and you will be greeted by breathtaking wide-angle views.
- Sometimes when buying tickets, the entrance to the fortress is included. So you can climb halfway to the top without any problem. Handy, isn't it?
The view from the walls of the fortress looking down on the city of Salzburg is absolutely wonderful. The whole city is spread out and can be seen like a scene from a living picture.
Visit to Museums and Historic Apartments
- Within the walls of the citadel are a number of interesting museums such as the Fortress Museum and the Rainer Regiment Museum.
- The somptuous living spaces make it easier to understand how the former rulers must have lived.
- Don't miss the Gothic ceremonial rooms and exhibitions displaying military history.
Mirabell Gardens
A short walk away, the Mirabell gardens await you. Created in the early 17th century by Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau (yes, another one with a simple name...), these gardens are a perfect example of Austrian Baroque.
Exploring the Central Garden
- The central garden is furnished with mythological statues and a majestic fountain.
- The sculptures inspired by The Sound of Music attract fans from around the world.
To take a walk in the mirabell gardens is to take a walk in a wonderful fairy tale. There are blooming flowers, trimmed bushes, everything is fantastic
Views of the Cathedral and the Fortress
The location of the garden allows overlooking the Salzburg cathedral with the fortress lying behind it, which is ideal for beautiful photographs or for just savoring the unusual essence of the location.
You should know that the Mirabell Gardens are open all year round, but they take on an even more magical dimension under the snow in winter. Try to imagine strolling among the snow-covered statues with the majestic Hohensalzburg Fortress as a backdrop. Quite nice, right?
Gourmet Experiences in Salzburg
Tasting the famous Mozartkugel: history and flavors
There is no doubt about it that whenever one mentions Salzburg, there is no way they would not bring up the Mozartkugel, those chocolate balls which are sure to tickle your sweet taste buds. Considered the favourite type of confectionery since 1890, the Mozartkugel treats were made in honor of the city’s most celebrated son: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The traditional Mozartkugel is filled with almond and pistachio marzipan, coated in praline and dark chocolate. These can be purchased at Café-Konditorei Fürst and Ritzerbogen.
Vegetarian options at restaurant M32 on Mönchsberg
If you're a vegetarian and feel left out every time I suggest restaurants in my other articles (which you should definitely read, at least this one), I've got you covered! When the time for dinner comes, and you would like to have a mesmerizing view, restaurant M32 on the Mönchsberg hill is the place to go. This restaurant can be accessed by a panoramic elevator and offers modern cuisine complete with a few vegetarian options that are likely to reach even the most picky of eaters. Savor delicious meals with great views over the city as well as Hohensalzburg Fortress. It's an ideal spot for a well-deserved gourmet break after tiring miles exploring the various museums and trails in the area.
Alternative gastronomic recommendations in the city centre
Except from remarkable traditional dishes, I should tell you that Salzburg is also rich in local restaurants where you can experience authentic Austrian specialties:
- Stiftskeller St. Peter: Located at the Saint Peter's Abbey, this restaurant is famous for its austrian cuisine.
- Café Tomaselli: I've already told you to go, but I'm repeating myself because you really should go! It began operating in 1703 and was one of the first cafés in Europe. The best thing to do here is to enjoy a coffee and a local cake.
- Augustiner Bräustübl: For something simpler, this monastic brewery lets you also sample the beer made by the monks along with certain typical dishes.
Each of them adds to the feeling of being in the city of Salzburg and not just in some kind of holiday destination.
Romantic and Authentic Activities
Romantic Walk on the Makartsteg Bridge with Its Love Locks
Sorry for the singles, but I had to write a few lines for people looking for romantic gestures in this city. The Makartsteg Bridge is a great place to take a romantic walk. Covered with thousands of love locks, this bridge is a symbol of affection and promise between couples. Each lock tells a unique story, and you can even bring your own to add your own touch to this tradition. The view of the old town from the bridge, especially at sunset, creates a magical atmosphere.
Exploring the Authenticity of the Right Bank District of the Salzach River
It is possible to have a more genuine experience when you visit Salzburg in 2 days by crossing the Right Bank District of the Salzach River. Off the tourist areas and towards this district, you will find a lot of local appeal and peace. In walking along the Imbergstiege stairs to Kapuzinerberg hill, there are beautiful paths and amazing views of the city. This part of Salzburg is embellished with charming narrow streets and colorful cottages that most tourists do not like exploring (which is great for us).
Relaxation on Linzer Gasse Avenue with Its Charming Cafés
Nothing completes your morning journey in the city better than a resting moment on the Linzer Gasse avenue. There are many great cafes along this avenue and My Mom's Coffee is one among them (not really my mother's coffee, I hope you got that). It is ideal for a cup of tea or sample a local pastry and enjoy watching the day to day activities of the population. The local artisans also sell various things in their stores that really add to the warm atmosphere such as handmade items and gifts. In winter the snow caps everything giving even more beauty to the already splendid avenue.
At every step of the Austrian town of Salzburg, there is something new to explore and new memories to be created during your exploratory walks.
Other attractions to consider
Visit to Petersfriedhof Cemetery: a peaceful place full of history
Located at the foot of Mönchsberg hill lies the Petersfriedhof Cemetery, a peaceful oasis right in the center of Salzburg, Austria. It is a graveyard where several centuries are buried, yet it is very calm and full of meditative energy. You'll see beautiful wheel-shaped coffin headstones and elaborate tombs linked to Salzburg's noble families.
Excursion to the Hellbrunn Palace with its famous “Trick Fountains”
Hellbrunn Palace is definitely a place to visit for every curious architect. This one is a Renaissance palace known for its spectacular water games. Most of the water games are made to entertain the visitors who loved surprises inside the palace. In particular, the Trick Fountains are particularly fascinating with their hidden fountains that are triggered during the walks. While at it, ensure that you take part in the guided tour to unlock all the beauty that this fantastic site has to offer.
Cable Car Excursion to Untersberg for Nature Lovers
If you’re looking for a different adventure outdoors, you should take the cable car to the Untersberg. This mountain which is 1972 meters above sea level provides excellent picturesque views of the city of Salzburg and its surroundings. When you are on the mountain, you can take part in several activities and trails that are best designed for fun and explorations. In winter, the land is blanketed with snowy white cover making it a heaven for skiing and other winter activities.
These three attractions depicts a different and appealing perspective of salzburg from the historical calmness at Petersfriedhof Cemetery,, the playful architecture at Hellbrunn Castle, or the beauty of nature at Untersberg itself. I really believe that each one of this attractions deserves a spot on your itinerary for you to fully experience all that Salzburg has to offer.
