What to do in Hanoi: Travel Guide, Activities and Must-Visit Sites

Introduction

Hanoi , considered by many as the heart and the legacy of the people of Vietnam, is one of my favourite place to go. The capital of Vietnam is located in the northern part of the country, is lively and energetic, and the main things that you could find consists of ancient buildings and modern infrastructure. But the question is: Have you any idea of what to do in Hanoi? If not, I hope you're ready, because prepare to be stunned by the abundance of things to visit in Hanoi.

I think you'll find it quite pleasant to wander through the streets, across the sites with impressive buildings and through the cheerful, unconventional shops that make the city so exquisite. Trust me when I say that there are lots of attractions for tourists. However, don't think that Hanoi is just a place to rest. It is a plunge in the heart of Vietnam. Every step leads to a new adventure, every meal is an emotional roller-coaster, and everything is simply an invitation to discover more.

Another thing while being in Hanoi is that you get to see the past and the present at the same time, by learning how complicated the history of Vietnam was. Starting with ancient temples and vestiges of the French colonial period to magnificent museums, I can assure you that the city has a lot to offer culturally.

So, brace yourself and get set for a lovely journey with this travel guide, which (I hope) will guide you to the important travel spots of the Hanoi city. In this practical guide, I will try to navigate you through the most interesting activities offered in the city and find out why this destination is so popular for travellers from around the world. Shall we begin? Let's go!

1. Explore Hanoi’s Old Quarter

Let's start with Hanoi’s Old Quarter, which is very much the heartbeat of the Vietnamese capital. Getting lost in its narrow and twisting alleys seems like travelling to the past. Every little detail has its own story, with French-style houses interspersed with traditional houses built by the Vietnamese. It's a really nice thing to see at least once in your life! A few must-visit streets that I think you should see:

  • Hàng Bông: a famous street for fashion and textile shops. Here you can purchase luxurious silks and hand-embroidered fabrics.
  • Hàng Da: this street is home to the famous Hàng Da market (yes, a name full of originality, I know), good for shopping for souvenirs or even just people watching.
  • Hàng Đào: if you didn't get enough of shopping, this street is a dream come true. Here, you’d find jewellery, accessories, and cheap clothes.

Traditional Shops and Lively Markets

Walking along these streets, you will also see :

  • Artisan shops, where souvenirs such as silk lanterns, water puppets and objects of all kinds are sold.
  • Historic cafes where you can enjoy a delicious Vietnamese coffee while watching local residents always busy with something.
  • Lively markets where you can experience the local cuisine with a variety of local street food, such as the famous bánh mì and phở.

Tip: Be sure to not miss the weekend night market in Old Quarter. It is one of those unique experiences, full of bright lights, loud sounds, and delicious smells.

You can do a lot of things while in the Old Quarter, including shopping and experiencing what actually is the spirit of Hanoi. This part really is the heart of the city, melting the oldest history of civilisation with modernity.

2. What to Do in Hanoi: Visit Cultural Sites

In the following paragraphs, I'll give you some of my top spots to visit in Hanoi. Let's start with my favourite places so that we can learn a little more about the local culture.

Temple of Literature

The temple of literature which was inaugurated in 1070 is a cultural jewel dedicated to Confucius (a Chinese philosopher, for your information). This ancient sanctuary is an architectural wonder nestled in the heart of Vietnam. Walking across its gardens and courtyards, you can really feel the spirit of knowledge that permeates this venerable temple complex.

The magnificient Temple of Literature. The magnificient Temple of Literature.

Ngoc Son

Another must visit site located on an island, in the Hoan Kiem Lake, is the Ngoc Son Temple. Connected by the Huc red bridge, this temple is not only a less crowded place in the busy city but it also offers an experience of the local mythology. Do not forget to take a look at the exhibited giant turtle, a symbol of longevity and luck.

Saint Joseph Cathedral

For a touch of Gothic architecture in the midst of Vietnam, you should definitely visit Saint Joseph Cathedral. This Catholic church in Hanoi, which is a French construction dating from 1886, bears great resemblance to Notre Dame de Paris, with the colourful stained glasses windows and huge towers. One advice that I can give you is that it can be a wonderful spiritual experience participating in a mass there.

Water Puppet Show at Thang Long Theatre

No visit to Hanoi would be complete, without attending a water puppet show at Thang Long Theatre. Hilarious yet graceful, this ancient art decorates the pages of Vietnamese stories. Talented puppeteers manipulate the puppets from under the water, creating a fascinating performance for young and old (I mean, less young) alike.

Also these cultural venues give a very tangible experience of the culture of Hanoi. I hope you're ready, because you will probably be impressed by the amount of history and devotion that they give to every single person.

3. Explore Traditional Markets

From my point of view, traditional markets in Hanoi are among the must-visit attractions to include on your list of things to do in Hanoi. It makes no sense not to visit at least one when you're here. They offer a total immersion into local life. You will find various products, from fresh food to clothing, and even handmade souvenirs. Here are some markets that I think you shouldn't miss:

Dong Xuan Market

It is hard to find other places that can rival with what Dong Xuan Market (nothing to do with Don Juan) has to offer. It's the largest covered market in Hanoi! Located in the Old Quarter, it is a vibrant and lively place where you can discover unique local products:

  • Food: exotic fruits, fresh vegetables, or local spices.
  • Clothing: traditional Vietnamese clothing, with colourful fabrics.
  • Souvenirs: handicrafts and handmade jewellery.

Do not miss the food stalls for a chance to try out wonderful local foods including pho or spring rolls.

Hang Da Market

The Hang Da Market is smaller but equally fascinating. Still within the Old Quarters, this market is less touristy than Dong Xuan and offers a more authentic experience. You will mainly find:

  • Food products: fresh meats, fish, seafood.
  • Fashion and accessories: modern clothing, shoes, bags.
  • Antiques: ancient objects and Vietnamese artworks.

Similarly to the previous market, you will also find stalls where you can taste traditional Vietnamese dishes prepared on the spot. It's a really great experience and I can't recommend it to you enough.

Hanoi Market are truly impressive and so colourful by night!Hanoi Market are truly impressive and so colourful by night!

Unique Shopping and Tasting Experiences

Shopping is not the only reason people go to local markets. You can also benefit from such a visit in different ways, such as:

  • Seeking local people who sell their wares, who are usually eager to tell the stories behind their products (the hardest part is actually getting them to stop talking).
  • Taste directly at the stalls, allowing you to discover the authentic flavours of Vietnam.
  • Getting to know the way people live on a daily basis, which is quite interesting given their way of life.

For me, these markets are essential if you are willing to plunge into the fascinating and colourful “heart” of the capital of Vietnam.

4. Admire the Iconic Bridges

The city's most spectacular bridges are probably the most representative elements of the relationship between past and present in Hanoi. In this section, I'm going to talk a bit about them.

Long Bien Bridge: A Historic Bridge in Hanoi

The Long Bien Bridge is one of the oldest bridges in Hanoi, built by the French in the early years of the twentieth century. It has gone through so many wars and yet has remained the hallmark of the Vietnamese people. Made of iron, this bridge gives a refreshing view of the Red River with its surrounding environment.

Why not ride a bike or simply walk across the bridge to view the sunset? You will see local fishermen, passing trains at crawling speeds, and maybe some curious tourists.

Chuong Duong Bridge

Another bridge that is worth a look is the Chuong Duong Bridge. Much less touristy but no less charming, it does have a geographical function and is a link between the old quarters and new urban areas. From here, one can view the clash of traditional Vietnamese houses and modern urban landscapes.

Nhat Tan Bridge

If you're looking for something a little more modern, you can visit the Nhat Tan bridge. It was opened for traffic in 2015, and is a breathtaking sight especially during the night when the lights change colour. It runs several kilometers and presents an awe inspiring view of the whole city.

Nhat Tan Bridge.Nhat Tan Bridge.

You should know, these three bridges are not only impressive architectural structures but also ideal places where you can take photos and keep a souvenir of your trip to Vietnam. I can assure you, be it for historical reasons or for simply being an admirer of beautiful sights, there is something unique in these bridges.

5. Enjoy Green Spaces and Lakes

As a lovely capital city, Hanoi is obviously adorned with many lakes and parks, which is (believe me) a great calm within the active city. Hence, there are more than one place that I think you should visit:

Hoan Kiem Lake

Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi's city center is a real treasure. This ancient lake is surrounded by fascinating legends and in the middle of it, you will find the Ngoc Son Temple (I talked about it a bit earlier, remember?) on a small island, linked by The Huc Bridge. Among the things you really should do:

  • Stroll around the lake: a pleasant walk with spectacular views around the lake.
  • Visit Ngoc Son Temple: a place to witness the culture as well as the history of the Vietnamese people.
  • Water puppet show: a traditional performance, which is performed at the Thang Long theatre.

West Lake

The Ho Tay Lake (also called the West Lake) is the widest and most famous lake in Hanoi. The picturesque scenery and variety of recreation have made it popular among residents and tourists. Among the things to do:

  • Cycling or jogging: you can use the bike paths that have been created around the lake.
  • Tasting seafood: head down to the lakeside restaurants and enjoy the local dishes.
  • Pagoda visits: visit Tran Quoc Pagoda, the oldest pagoda in Vietnam!

Other green spaces: places to visit in Hanoi

There is also:

  • Lenin Park: a large park with lush gardens, perfect for a picnic or a family stroll.
  • Thu Le Park: home to a zoo, and therefore this is ideal for a family outing.

These places give not only a natural retreat but also a different perspective on local life in Hanoi. Be it to relax by lakes or explore green parks, I assure you, each green space has something unique to offer.

6. Explore the historic and vibrant neighborhoods

Historic districts in Hanoi form the pulsating heart of the city, where past and present are mixed into a unique, intoxicating cocktail. Among them all, I believe that the French Quarter is something one must see in Hanoi: with its wide, tree-lined boulevards, beautiful colonial houses, and many cafes, it will transport you to another era.

Hanoi's 36 Streets Quarter

The 36 Streets Quarter, also known as the Old Quarter, is a fascinating maze of narrow and bustling alleyways. These streets are all easy to remember because they all describe the wares or items that were traditionally found there. Examples of which are:

  • Hàng Bông: known for its textile and sewing industry.
  • Hàng Da: I already talked about it earlier, but as a reminder, it is home to a popular covered market where you can find everything from clothes to souvenirs.
  • Hàng Đào: specializes in silk and handmade products.

Try to get lost in these streets, because it's an experience in itself. The vibrant sounds of motorcycle horns, the enticing smells of street food stalls, and the bright colours of displayed goods form a constantly evolving spectacle that I can't get enough of.

Recommendations for Places to Visit in Hanoi

I can't repeat it often enough, but for a cultural break, don't miss the Ngoc Son Temple located on the island of Hoan Kiem Lake. It is a quiet area ideal for relaxing after long walks around the busy city. And when it comes to gastronomy, here are some of my personal favourite recommendations:

Keep in mind that each area has its own distinctive character and charm, offering you a rich tapestry of experiences to discover.
