When to go to Amman

The best time to visit Amman is between April and June or September and November. This time of year is pleasantly mild and sunny, perfect for seeing the Old Town, the Citadel or busy markets which can be horrendously hot in summer. Spring is particularly agreeable, with verdant scenery and pleasant and tranquil surroundings. Autumn also brings moderate temperatures and lower visitor numbers, letting you see the sites to the full, without the crowds. Summer can be very hot and dry, with temperatures frequently above 35°C but the air is more tolerable than down by the sea. Winter (December to February) is cooler with rain occasionally falling and it is not unheard of for the city to even have a few snow days. If you want to combine decent weather, moderate prices and real discovery of Amman, we suggest coming in spring or autumn.

Once you've had your fill, head to the Citadel of Amman, on the hill of Jabal al-Qala'a, where you'll find magnificent views over the city and relics of history, including the Temple of Hercules and the Umayyad Palace. In the afternoon, continue to the more modern Abdali district, or stroll through the eclectic, bohemian atmosphere of Rainbow Street, packed with small boutiques, art galleries and tea rooms. For sunset, head to Al-Hussein Park or to a terrace overlooking Amman's golden rooftops.

End the day with a delicious dinner in an upscale restaurant or on a lively rooftop with a breathtaking view, to enjoy all your senses and Levantine cuisine with a contemporary twist. All in all, your day in Amman will be rich in history, flavors and Oriental hospitality.

Practical information about Amman

Amman, the capital city of Jordan, is a unique mix of old and new, and perfect for a cultural holiday. The most convenient way to get to the city is from Queen Alia International Airport, which is approximately 35 km from the city center. You can also choose to take a shuttle bus from the airport to the hotel. Queen Alia International Airport is also the only airport that serves Amman. Since public transport is underdeveloped it is not the best way to move but cabs are affordable and are widely used. Walking in the central districts is also a pleasant alternative. The local currency is the Jordanian dinar (JOD), and even though many places take cards, it is advisable to always have some cash. The cost of living in Amman is still relatively low, with inexpensive typical meals available for lots of choices and it's the same for accommodation. It is prudent to dress respectfully in all places of worship. Amman is also a perfect location for many exciting expeditions and launches into the other amazing places in the rest of Jordan, including Petra, the Wadi Rum desert and the Dead Sea.
