Things to do at Jaipur
Get ready to discover the fascinating city of Jaipur; a city where every monument has a story, and every street speaks of Rajasthan and its royalty. Not-to-Miss:
- The Palace of Winds (Hawa Mahal): a fantastic tourist attraction you'll instantly recognize for its unique openwork façade - great for photos.
- The Amber Fort: an enormous spectacular fort perched on a hill-top.
- City Palace: a grand mix of Mughal and Rajput architecture.
- Jantar Mantar: an astronomical observatory, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site; interestingly notable for the extra large mega instruments.
- Jal Mahal: a floating palace in the middle of a beautiful lake - mysterious and poetic.
- Johari Bazaar market: the best place for jewels and textiles; the same place, I enjoyed discovering an expanse of a Sari Marketplace, meant for locals, not visitors.
Galtaji Temple (also called "Monkey Temple"): a sacred and spiritual place of worship, into the hills, just keep an eye out for the curious monkeys!

Itinerary ideas
Visit the Amber Fort and the City Palace to kick off your day in Jaipur, Rajasthan's "pink city", which is about a 30-minute drive from Amber. The Amber Fort is beautiful and has a wealth of lavishly frescoed palaces and large courtyards, but be sure to visit early enough to view the surrounding landscape from the fort's top. Head back into the city to check out the famous Hawa Mahal (Palace of the Winds). You'll love its façade of invisible windows. Then treat yourself to lunch at a local restaurant, and try a Rajasthani thali. This meal is a colourful and flavourful collection of many Rajasthani specialties, and has undeniable "wow" factor as well.
In the afternoon you can enjoy the ambience of the City Palace, (which is also a great visual and cultural half-day adventure) which is a unique royal complex that features Mughal and European architecture as well as the Jantar Mantar, at the same time impressive in its UNESCO status as an astronomical observatory.
After your palace and observatory excursion, you can wander the bazaars on Johari or Bapu Bazaar, both bustling with shops selling jewels, fabrics and handicrafts. You might also want to take in a cultural show if you have time, or have dinner on a roof terrace bathing in the evening view of Jaipur illuminated.
Overall, this is what a typical day out of a city with styles is about - and this itinerary will drop you right in the heart of the city, its heritage and endearing flavours and local effervescence.
