Activities

Want to experience Liège differently? Discover the best activities and excursions to immerse yourself in the heart of the city and its friendly atmosphere.

When to go to Liège

Liège is best discovered from May to September, when the city is full of life and the temperatures are ideal for strolling along the Meuse or on one of the many terraces. In summer, festivals, open-air events and markets add to the atmosphere, even if they are busier. For a quiet, economical stay, I recommend spring (April-May) and early autumn (September-October): fewer tourists, better prices and still mild weather. In winter, Liège puts on its festive dress with its famous Christmas village, one of the oldest in Belgium and the ideal destination for a warm-hearted trip. Ultimately, the city can be visited all year round, but mid-season offers the best compromise in terms of climate, atmosphere and budget.

Global budget

There is no need to spend a lot of money visiting Liège: hotel accommodation for two starts from €40, meals are affordable for about €15 and activities cost between €20-50! The city still offers a very affordable destination. Public transport is useful and affordable, while even a beer on the terrace will not cost too much. On average, you should reckoned between about €69 and €247 per person per day, depending of course on how you travel. Whether you are into value for money or comfortable travel, Liège has lots of value for money for a city break in Belgium.

Itinerary ideas

Start your day with breakfast on the terrace of the Place du Marché. The terrace is surrounded by historic facades and the Perron, a symbol of Liège's freedoms. After breakfast, head to the historic heart of the city, a labyrinth of cobbled streets, old buildings and hidden courtyards. Take time to visit the Grand Curtius, an interesting museum on the banks of the Meuse. After the morning, I suggest a bit of sport with a climb up the 374 steps of the Montagne de Bueren. Your reward will be a panoramic view of the city. For lunch, take a seat in the lively Carré district. You'll find plenty of good places to eat here. In the afternoon, you can relax with a stroll along the Meuse, or relax in the Parc de la Boverie. And if you're interested, you can visit the Musée de la Boverie. This museum mixes ancient and modern art. For architecture fans, Liège-Guillemins station, designed by Calatrava, is a must-see. End the day with a local beer on a terrace. An unusual guided tour in the evening is another option. Liège is as much about living as it is about visiting, with a friendly atmosphere that marks every moment.

Practical information about Liège

Liège is located in Wallonia, in the east of Belgium, and is easily accessible by train from Brussels, Namur or Maastricht. The modern and well-connected Liège-Guillemins station is a central arrival point for visitors to the city. Once you've arrived, you can explore the city on foot (and it's fairly easy to get around) or, if you prefer, there's a network of buses and shuttles to get you around quickly. In Belgium, the local currency is the euro, and most shops accept card payments. The local language is French, but English is often well understood in the more touristy areas. Liège can be visited at any time of year, but May to September are obviously the most pleasant months in terms of climate and events. In winter, the city is very popular for its Christmas market. In terms of safety, the city itself is generally safe, but, as in any large city, you should remain vigilant and pay close attention in crowded areas. Make sure you wear good shoes, as the Bueren mountain can be a surprise for the calves! And don't forget to try some of the local specialties, such as boulets à la liégeoise or delicious Liège waffles, for a treat at the end of a long day's sightseeing.
