Activities

Around Mons, every excursion is an invitation to adventure: between castles, green paths and picturesque villages, let yourself be surprised by a multitude of activities that will make your stay even more rich and lively.

When to go to Mons

The best time to visit Mons is from May to September. During this period, the weather is mild and pleasant, ideal for strolling through the narrow streets and taking a break on the terraces of the Grand-Place. In summer, the festive atmosphere takes over with the many events, including the famous Doudou in June. However, this is a busier time of year, and prices are a little higher. If you're looking for a quiet, affordable break, spring or early autumn is best: it's less crowded, accommodation is more affordable, and the weather remains mild. Winter, with its more intimate atmosphere, is perfect for those who like to discover a city at their own pace in a warm, authentic atmosphere.

Itinerary ideas

Start your day on the Grand-Place, the lively heart of Mons, surrounded by historic buildings and lively terraces. Enjoy a coffee while admiring the town hall, then meet the famous Grand-Place monkey (stroking its head is good luck). A visit to the Collegiate Church of Sainte-Waudru, a Gothic masterpiece with an interesting treasure trove and splendid stained glass windows, is a must. Right next door is the belfry, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which can be visited by prior arrangement for a panoramic view of the whole town and surrounding countryside.

After the climb, have lunch in a small local restaurant or on a terrace if the sun is shining. After lunch, head to the BAM (fine arts museum) to discover contemporary and international exhibitions. If you're a history buff, the Maison Van Gogh, a little further on, has an exhibition telling the story of the painter's arrival in the region. For a nice stroll at the end of the day, you can probably stroll through the Château d'Havré park or the Jardin du Mayeur, two very green and peaceful green spaces.

In the evening, round off your day with dinner on the Grand-Place and enjoy (once again) the warm, spontaneous atmosphere of Mons, which comes alive at night and transforms itself into a meeting place where the conviviality of the Belgians really comes into its own.

Practical information about Mons

To make the most of your stay in Mons, there are a few practical points to bear in mind. The city can be reached in less than an hour by train from Brussels, making it an ideal weekend excursion with minimal travel time. Once in the city, the historic centre is best visited on foot, although buses and taxis can take you to the more out-of-the-way districts and surrounding sites. As well as French, which is the most widely spoken language, Belgians are generally open and friendly towards people who try their hand at English. As far as payments are concerned, most shops and businesses accept bank cards, but it is always useful to have a little cash for small markets or snack bars. Shop opening hours vary considerably, but you should be aware that most shops are closed on Sundays. If you are coming by car, it can be difficult to find free parking in the city centre in particular, and you would normally have to pay for parking anyway. Public car parks are available close to most central attractions. Pack a small jacket or umbrella, as the weather can be unpredictable in Belgium, especially in summer. Keep these tips in mind and you'll have peace of mind to enjoy and explore Mons' unique atmosphere.
