Itinerary ideas
Start your day on the Grand-Place, the lively heart of Mons, surrounded by historic buildings and lively terraces. Enjoy a coffee while admiring the town hall, then meet the famous Grand-Place monkey (stroking its head is good luck). A visit to the Collegiate Church of Sainte-Waudru, a Gothic masterpiece with an interesting treasure trove and splendid stained glass windows, is a must. Right next door is the belfry, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which can be visited by prior arrangement for a panoramic view of the whole town and surrounding countryside.
After the climb, have lunch in a small local restaurant or on a terrace if the sun is shining. After lunch, head to the BAM (fine arts museum) to discover contemporary and international exhibitions. If you're a history buff, the Maison Van Gogh, a little further on, has an exhibition telling the story of the painter's arrival in the region. For a nice stroll at the end of the day, you can probably stroll through the Château d'Havré park or the Jardin du Mayeur, two very green and peaceful green spaces.
In the evening, round off your day with dinner on the Grand-Place and enjoy (once again) the warm, spontaneous atmosphere of Mons, which comes alive at night and transforms itself into a meeting place where the conviviality of the Belgians really comes into its own.
