Itinerary ideas

To start of your day grab a coffee at the Place de la Cathedrale terrace facing the imposing Cathédrale Notre-Dame. Spend time enjoying the sculpted façade before deciding if you want to meander up to the platform for the mind-blowing panoramic views over the city and Alsatian plain.

On the way back down, you can wander down the stairs and onto the cobbled streets, make your way to Petite France, the one of the most iconic picturesque places in Strasbourg with cobbled streets, half-timbered houses and canals. Stroll along the water and grab a few pictures, and then head for lunch at a traditional Winstub and enjoy a crisp flammekueche.

In the afternoon, take a boat trip down the Ill River. This is a lovely way to see the covered bridges, locks and European Quarter from a different perspective. Next stop is the imperial Neustadt district to view the under-appreciated German architecture from the 19thᵉ century.

Finish your day at Orangerie Park: meander around the lake, watch the storks or relax in a park cafe.

Practical information about Strasbourg

Getting here is not difficult by either train (just 2 hours from Paris) and with an international airport, also by plane. Once you here, you won't always need a car: the city center is easily walkable or bike-able, and the trams - one of the most modern tram networks in Europe - will take you around every corner of the city quickly. And don't forget your "Pass Alsace" to save on the many museums and activities while you are around! And because Strasbourg is actually a border town, many places accept payment in euros or international cards but it also won't hurt to have a little cash, especially at the markets. On Sundays, many stores close, but cafés, museums and attractions remain open to allow for a slower pace and friendlier vibe - when you walk around, you'll even notice fewer cars on the road! In general, Strasbourg is safe and everyone is friendly, but just be a little vigilant of busy areas particularly in the market square during the Christmas season - you end up in busy and packed areas! Also remember to book your hotel in advance, especially during high season and or special events, stabling, and getting the best rates there might be from the heart of Alsace!
