Skopje City: A Traveler's Paradise in the Balkans
Introduction
One of the standout features of Skopje City located along the Vardar River in the North Macedonia region is that it is one of the many travel jewels in the Balkans (If you want to see another jewels, I suggest this incredible blog post about Perast in Montenegro). The rest of the City is how close history and modernity are into each other where everybody who walks into the city will be amazed (as I was).
Skopje can be characterized as a kaleidoscope of history and modernity. The architecture and cultural membership of the city, which was occupied by the Ottomans for more than five centuries, speaks volumes of the city. You could for example take a walk along the crowded streets and you will find pieces of history including the Skopje Fortress Kale and the Church of St. Clement of Ohrid among others.
But I want to say that Skopje is not only about the past. One can feel the pulsating urban life, for example, a few kilometers from the city, in Macedonia square – modern sculptures as well as lively cafes have brought the historic center of the city to life. Old and new in this context means one thing to skopje, business in the normal sense of the word has in fact become a tourist attraction.
If you are passionate about history, art, culture or enjoy the exploration of exotic places, then I hope that these paragraphs will be useful to you, and I can assure you that Skopje City will show you something unique.
1. Discovering the Main Tourist Attractions
Strolling within Skopje City, you can be rest assured of good sights and memorable experiences. If you are fond of nature, food adventures, engaging in history or even walking in the extravagant streets – Skopje offers it all!
Mount Vodno and Millennium Cross
First on the agenda about the places of interest in Skopje is Mount Vodno. This is an area, worth going to if you are looking for some stunning views and a little bit of adventure as well. It is only a few kilometers from the city center, but there are excellent mountains with trails for climbing that are tailored to all fitness levels. Above it is the majestic Millennium Cross, one of the tallest crosses in the world standing tall at sixty-six meters. It is still one of the most emblematic objects and allows you to enjoy views of the city of Skopje and its suburbs. You can also decide to take the cable car (which I recommend for the views) or ascend on foot.
Matka Canyon
To those who wish for more of the wonderful gifts of nature, proceed towards Matka Canyon. Oriented approximately 15 kilometers Southwest of Skopje, this amazing gorge is suitable for kayaking, boating as well as visiting hidden caves such as Vrelo Cave. Surrounded by tranquil lakes and high cliffs, this canyon pervivifies memory for those like me who love nature. Remember, it's a great place for photographs, the scenery here is splendid!
Debar Maalo, one fantastic attraction in Skopje city
For those who prefer local places, Debar Maalo will be found the best spot. This lively downtowne neighborhood is full of cozy cafes, fashionable nightlife and some of the best eating places in Skopje. If traditional Macedonian food or international dishes seem suitable, rest assured Debar Maalo will cater for all your needs. Also in Debar Maalo, it is interesting to observe the local residents and the ambience, which is quite enjoyable.
Brutalist Architecture
A variety of architectural styles can be seen in the plans of Skopje, but what strikes the most is its brutalistic architecture. After the earthquake of 1963, one of the most incredible architects in the world, Kenzo Tange, was invited to compete for the redesign of the city’s portions. The result? A set of breathtakingly original and usable expressionistic works. Among such bulwarks can be mentioned the mighty Post Office Building and the edifice of Central Railway Station.
Old Bazaar
There is no way you can get out of Skopje without visiting the Old Bazaar. This active commercial area was also established in the Ottoman period and is still considered to be one of the largest bazaar complexes in the Balkans. Here, you will find a maze of alleys lined with stores selling anything from artesian crafts to tasty snacks. Moreover, it also possesses several historical important places like the Mustafa Pasha Mosque and Kapan Han caravanserai.
Skopje City does not only preserve its ancient heritage but successfully incorporates new forms of attraction in the life of the city, which would be interesting for all people regardless of their age.
2. Immerse in Art and Culture
Without a doubt, Skopje is a cultural haven waiting. I advice you to start your exploration from the Archeological Museum of Macedonia. The exhibits in this museum may be considered as a kind of time machine and cover various periods of Macedonian history, starting from the ancient coins, and finishing with the arsenal of the middle ages.
You could stroll inside the City Park where you can admire both the art and nature. Here, sculptures and other art installations can be located among the trees and walking paths. It’s a great area for a walk as one can enjoy both, the manifestations of the art as well as the coziness of the surroundings.
A must visit is the Mother Teresa Square. This square, which is dedicated to the most famous of the citizens of Skopje, pays tribute to the life and works of Mother Teresa. Moreover, one has the opportunity to visit the Memorial House of Mother Teresa, which will make the picture more complete.
The Alexander the Great Fountain is one of the domineering features within Macedonia Square as well. Believe me when I say it's really impressive. It's a great place and not only because of the fountain, but also because it is surrounded by statues of famous historical people. The water show at night surrounded by the illuminated fountains is quite enchanting.
Finally, I think you could experience culture at its best by catching a show or sporting event at the Filip II Arena Stadium. So many activities happen in this new space including musical events, soccer games and people will get to appreciate what modern Skopje city offers as far as culture is concerned. If you prefer the visual arts or enjoy historical studies, Skopje’s cultural milieu guarantees you rich returns in every step taken, trust me.
3. Engaging With Nature And The Great Outdoors
Adventure lovers and nature lovers are invited by Skopje City to a rich collection of activities outdoors. I believe Matka Gorge is particularly noteworthy. It's gorgeous and is located just a short ride away from the centre of the city. Try to picture this: incessantly kayaking across still waters, going to hidden caves, and trekking in mountainous trails with spectacular sceneries in sight. Seems wonderful, right? The gorge is also good for more than just adventure sports, it is a paradise for both bird watchers or photography enthusiasts with its beautiful landscape full of low canopies on rugged terrains.
It is also home to City Park (Gradski Park) which is an open space in town for recreation for both tourists and locals. Whether you feel like going for a stroll, jogging or simply watching people, such a space is a great break from the hustle and bustle of the urban city of Skopje. The park is frequently used for outdoor activities as well as festivals, which will give you some unique ambiance during your visit.
If you desire to have more than just relaxation, the city of Skopje presents options of engaging in various outdoor activities for different seekers. For example, mountain bikers can make use of the numerous walls surrounding Matka Gorge while there are mountain bike as well that tower above beautiful scenery.
Remember how we said that you should go and see Vodno Mountain and its most famous sightseeing spot the Millennium Cross or one of the worthiest and enormous crosses in the world? A cable car or several hiking trails lead to it and the views are really astounding (even more than astounding, staggering!).
Take off and enjoy the fresh air in Skopje City and understand how it is a place that is underrated for people who love the outdoors and adventure activities!
4. Delight in the Gastronomic Delicacies
Skopje is home to people of diverse cultures, and this is palpable in the food offered in restaurants. The classical Macedonian cuisine is a wonderful composition of Mediterranean and Balkan traditions, whose number of variations you wish never end.
Typical Foods to Sample
You should definitely try these dishes (I'm personally responsible if you don't like them):
- Tavče Gravče: It is a thick bean stew and it is the most well-known national dish.
- Ajvar: Pimento and eggplant chutney with fine flavor, could be used with several dishes or can be served alone.
- Shopska Salad: Salad with diced or cubed fresh toppings, sirene cheese, chopped tomatoes, cucumber, onion, and peppers.
- Kebapi: Minced meat sausages, usually grilled, chaotically bundled with bread and onions.
Food Markets to Explore
Another remarkable cultural experience, in my opinion, is the sightseeing of food markets which is the best place to connect with people. The Old Bazaar - is not just a historical bazaar. It is always full of fresh stock, filled with fruits, vegetables, spices, and many other snacks.
- Bit Pazar: One of the oldest markets in the city, with vegetables, fruits, and legumes for sale, as well as spices, dried fruits, dairy, etc.
- Green Market (Zelen Pazar): If you want to see the local life at its very best, this is the place, where people buy meat, fish and vegetables.
Gastronomy Activities
For an experience worth remembering, sample the atmosphere at any of the city’s numerous kafanas – which are essentially traditional inns and restaurants, furnished with live entertainment. Destan and Kaj Serdarot are some of my best places and the most frequented places by the locals and the tourists which have great food and wonderful ambiance.
Each culinary adventure that one undertakes in Skopje helps to foster a deeper appreciation of the composition that is found in the region.
5. Excursions to Nearby Attractions
Also during your vacation in Skopje City allow yourself a few day trips to nearby attractions. Excursions to attractions will help you understand the culture of Macedonia, the geography and all its natural beauties more. If so, here are a few places that I think you shouldn't miss:
Kokino Observatory
The Kokino observatory is situated approximately 75 km from Skopje, and it’s a rather ancient megalithic construction that you will want to time travel. Historically considered one of the world’s oldest mountain top observatories by NASA, Kokino has been in used for over 3800 years.
- Cultural Importance: This structure served as an astronomical observation deck to ancient communities. Figure out how stone markers were utilized by ancient people who were getting interested in the sky.
- Nature’s Treasures: Located on a hilltop, Kokino provides an elaborate view of the surrounding area that stretches for miles. This is a perfect place to visit for those who love photography (but also those who don't!).
- Informative Tours: In case you want to learn more from the trip, it is advisable to take part in a professional tour that concerns the antiquities and the celestial conundrums of the place.
Ohrid Lake
From my point of view, it feels like being within a very quiet postcard picture, whilst on a holiday in Ohrid lake. This UNESCO World Heritage site is about two hours by car from Skopje and has been called the Macedonian Jewel. Why does this place seem like a nice place to visit, you ask? I'll tell you why:
- Crystal Clear Waters: The clearer waters of the lake are well suited for swimming, rowing, or even lazing on the beach.
- Cultural Centers: Head to the ancient town of Ohrid that lies along the coast of the lake and get drowned in its stone streets, Byzantine architecture, and a fortress from the middle ages.
- Hiking Opportunities: Other than water activities, there is Galicica National Park you can hike around with trails that overlook lake Ohrid and lake Prespa.
Stobi Archaeological Site
Located at about an hour’s drive from Skopje, Stobi Archaeological Site is a fascinating look at the Roman past of Macedonia.
- Ruins Which Were Unearthed: You should definitely stroll amongst the ruins of theatres, churches, and palaces and see for yourself what life looked for people in the days of old Rome.
- Mosaic Artworks: Marvel at the ancient mosaics with mythological and geometrical designs that have been preserved to this day.
These day tours offer not only the chance for you to enhance your travel but also the chance to experience the remarkable culture and nature of North Macedonia from different angles. Each of these places though far away complements your knowledge of the city of Skopje itself.
Practical Information for Visiting Skopje City
You are making plans to come to Skopje city? Below are a few tips that I find useful which, I hope, will help you enjoy your trip.

The best time to visit and travel around the city of Skopje in my opinion is in the months of Spring (April to June) and Fall (September to October). During these periods of the month, the weather is conducive making it appropriate to do site seeing and other recreational activities. The summers can be very hot whereas, the winters though moderate can lead to some snowfall.
Getting Around: Public Transportation
The public transportation in Skopje are quite efficient as well as cheap:
- Buses: The town has a reasonable number of buses for the city commuters. Watch out for the bright red double-decker buses.
- Taxis: are common, just make sure the driver turns on the meter.
- On Foot: Because a lot of the sites in Skopje are clustered in the same general location, one can walk and visit several attractions in a day.

The currency used in Skopje is Macedonian Denar (MKD).
