10 Unforgettable Things to Do in Antalya

Introduction

Antalya reminds us of a shining gem on the surface of the Mediterranean Sea, as it is situated right in the center of the western coast of Turkey. The ancient and modern stimuli of this megapolis make it the best terminal for any globe trotter. For those visiting the kind of place that most tourists want to see, they will always have something to do in the beautiful city of Antalya.

The inquiry into what to do in Antalya is fitting because this brings out the uniqueness of the city in question. The history-laden remains of the city, the beaches with beautiful aqua blue waters — no matter which part of the city you explore, it's an experience that you won’t soon forget.

First view of the landscape youFirst view of the landscape you'll see in Antalya.

Due to all the visits I've made to Antalya wanting to find the best places to visit, I finally said to myself ‘Why not?’ and so I'm going to lead the top 10 most memorable things that can be done in Antalya. This list includes not only the most interesting places in Antalya but also defines the features of this city. So ladies and gentlemen, allow me to present and share with you the specific reasons why you should definitely include the following interesting activities on your next holiday especially during the summer in Antalya Turkey!

1. Discovering Kaleiçi (Old Town)

Exploring Antalya Old Town, known as Kaleiçi, felt like walking through a living museum. The narrow, winding streets lined with Ottoman-era houses took me back in time. Each cobblestone path seemed to share ancient secrets, making every corner an adventure. That's why it tops the list of things to do in Antalya.

Notable Landmarks

  • Hadrian’s Gate: This majestic triumphal arch is one of the most iconic historical sites in Antalya. Standing before it, I could almost hear the crowds that once welcomed Emperor Hadrian himself. The detailed carvings and grand structure left me speechless.
  • Yivli Minare Mosque: Another gem within Kaleiçi is the Yivli Minare Mosque. Its fluted minaret is a masterpiece of Seljuk architecture. As I wandered through its courtyard and gazed at the detailed tile work, I felt a deep connection to the rich cultural tapestry of Antalya.

Local Shops and Cafes

Venturing out into the antique quarters of Kaleiçi was nothing short of a miracle. Everywhere, I spotted stores, filled with interesting trinkets of all kinds. Even painted pots, colorful fabrics and delicate ornaments attracted me at every manmade corner.

Castle Café & Bistro was one of the best places I have visited. Located at the terrace looking over the ancient streets, it is a perfect place to enjoy coffee or cake. I could never have believed that pleasant atmosphere together with lovely view of ancient city walls would have such memorable impact on me. While enjoying very delicious dessert I completely forgot the world around and admired Kaleiçi.

I also had a wonderful experience at Luna Garden, a snug little place filled with lush greenery. There, I sipped on traditional Turkish tea served in delicate glass cups. The cosy environment and friendly conversations created the perfect setting for unwinding after a day of exploration.

Kaleiçi represents more than just its old-fashioned buildings. It caters for all our senses and stays with us even when we have gone.

2. Marveling at Düden Waterfalls

The second thing to do in Antalya on the list, Düden Waterfalls, was a beautiful and captivating place that left me totally amazed. The remarkable beauty and strength of tumbling waters form an enchanting melody stimulating visitors to stop for a moment and enjoy tranquility.

Düden Waterfalls on the left.Düden Waterfalls on the left.

It is not every day that one gets to see a waterfall from a great height and so this is a memory that remains strongly imprinted in the mind. The upper falls also give breathtaking views which allow the viewers to go behind the wall of water and shower in its refreshing droplets. The rushing waters are like the soft voice of the nature, relaxing and energizing at the same time.

Exploring on Foot and by Boat

Walking paths wind through lush greenery, offering various viewpoints to admire the falls. Each step along these trails leads to new perspectives, with hidden spots perfect for contemplation or photography. My favourite part was taking a boat tour from the nearby marina. Gliding on calm waters towards the lower falls provided an exhilarating perspective as we approached the thundering cascade from below – a view that simply takes your breath away.

Capturing Memories

Photographing the Düden Waterfalls is both rewarding and challenging. Here are some tips I found useful: Firstly, go in early to capture the soft morning light filtering through the trees. Second, protect your camera gear from spray with waterproof covers. And third, shoot from different angles and make use of natural frames for unique shots.

Standing right inside this wonder of nature, I felt a strong connection to the lively landscapes of Antalya. Whether you're an avid photographer or just looking for a bit of tranquility, Düden Waterfalls promise an unforgettable time.

3. Relaxing at Konyaaltı Beach

Konyaaltı Beach, with its tinkle-clean waters and stunning view, became my retreat of rest amidst the hustle and bustle of Antalya. One is greeted with the glittery Mediterranean, inviting him into its refreshing embrace. The Taurus Mountains at the back form this dramatic effect on the landscape and create a perfect setting for relaxation.

Breathtaking view of Konyaaltı beach.Breathtaking view of Konyaaltı beach.

Among the most amusing ways to pass leisure time was engaging in various recreational activities on the beach promenade. One can either swim in the cool water of turquoise hue or rent a pedal boat, at one's whim, to just go for a nice, easy ride. But the promenade itself has many eating options to fit every taste and preference. Whether it be popping into one of the many food trucks for a quick snack or sitting down to eat at an oceanfront café, every experience is unique. Here are some of the best places I use to go for sunbathing:

  • The western end: less crowded and private.
  • Close to the main promenade: Other facilities of this campsite include showers and snack bars.

I advise going to 7 Mehmet, one of the well-known restaurants in town, which is not very far from Konyaaltı Beach. Its seafood dishes included a catch of the day, cooked just perfectly and simply enchanted me. And with a glass of chilled white wine paired with it, enjoyed with the view of the Mediterranean, this is a deal that will make your dinner unforgettable.

Thanks for corroborating with us in our travelings in discovering more of the coastal settings. Take a look at our post on Tenerife, with stunning beaches and volcanic scenery. For another pretty seaside escape, have a look at our article on Menton, one of France's most charming towns that faces the Mediterranean and features lovely gardens.

A day spent at Konyaaltı Beach would entail much more than just sunbathing. On one such day, you would experience local culture, family activities that Antalya offers, and relishing every minute by this picturesque coastal area.

4. Sunbathing on Lara Beach

Lara Beach is sandy and golden, with shallow waters, making it an idyllic paradise for family getaways. This popular local beach is a family favorite, having a great day out with some excellent opportunities to relax and just sunbathe.

Lara Beach, a must-do in Antalya.Lara Beach, a must-do in Antalya.

I managed to spend a few days in Antalya and also indulged in several luxury resorts in the vicinity. Even the highest-rated spa treatments proved to be quite relaxing. Isn’t it delightful to relax after receiving a massage with the gentle sound of waves? Then I would sit on a beach, enjoying the sun and the stunning views while drinking cool cocktails.

In case it is necessary to indicate the most suitable times for visiting Lara Beach, I would personally define the weekdays, early mornings, or any time when people want to avoid the craziness. On this way, one will be able to relish in the peace of this spot for some time before all the sun worshipers turn up.

As you continue your tour in this magical place, remember that every visit might be special because each would give something different, from striking sunsets to friendly conversations among travelers. Do not be reluctant to soak in everything that Lara Beach can give you!

5. Discovering the Wonders of Antalya Aquarium

We're coming up to the middle of the list of the best things (in my opinion) to do in Antalya. The moment I had stepped inside the Antalya Aquarium, it was an underwater world alive, full of excitement and wonder. It is one of the biggest aquariums in the world, and the diversity of marine life and habitats was simply astounding.

Varied Marine Creatures and Distinct Exhibits

The most amazing 131-metre-long tunnel - the longest in the world - in this aquarium allowed me to be transported into the kingdom of water, with sharks, rays, and schools of colored fish swimming above.

The famous ocean tunnel I was talking about. The famous ocean tunnel I was talking about.

Every zone takes you to another side of the world. You can go from tropical coral reefs to the mysterious place in the world that is the ocean. Literally, every turn is another scene. One moment I was marveling at bright clownfish darting among anemones. The next, I found myself face to face with a formidable sand tiger shark.

Engaging Displays

Touching the interactive displays turned a visit of just looking into something active.

  • Touch Pools: These gave the opportunity to lightly touch starfish and sea urchins and at the same time learn about the texture and characteristics of these marine creatures.
  • Virtual Reality Experiences: In the VR zones, it was an adrenaline-packed fun-time diving with whales, or exploring sunken ships-never getting a drop of water on your skin.

A highlight of mine had to be the Fish Feeding Sessions, whereby I was able to feed koi fish right from my hand-feeling their soft nibbles while they came around eagerly.

Family-Friendly Activities in Antalya

Antalya Aquarium is among the perfect family-friendly destinations. The kids and adults alike can be filled with enjoyable amusements of knowledge, such as:

  • The Snow World & Ice Museum - the first of its kind - refreshing from its ice sculptures to the slides, etc.
  • The XD Cinema, which combines the 3D movies with effects to reach immersion.

Antalya Aquarium was more than about visiting the marine life, it was about the fun, education, and unforgettable ways of experiencing them.

6. Visiting Aspendos Theatre.

Visiting the Aspendos Theatre, the sound of ancient performances can still be heard echoing as this theatre is an excellently preserved ancient Roman theatre, standing as a testament to the architectural prowess of its age.

I had my breath caught in that theatre the moment I neared this big entrance into the house. The size and other details were enormous, taking me back to when this was full of shows and audiences alike. It is a historic theatre.

Aspendos is within driving distance from Antalya, hosting historic importance that draws tourists from all over the world. The place was constructed in the 2nd century AD and represents impressive engineering, offering at the same time spectacular views to the lively cultural life of ancient Rome.

Unforgettable Performances

To catch a show here was nothing but magic. It's an incredible acoustic space. Every note flows around the place perfectly, allowing me to fully appreciate both the talent of the performers and the genius of ancient design. I almost felt like a part of living history, surrounded by fellow enthusiasts who shared in this extraordinary experience.

Whether you're an architecture buff or just find something to do in Antalya which is out of the ordinary, the Aspendos Theatre promises a unique time travel through history and culture. History and alive performance definitely make this venue enchantingly atmospheric. It goes without saying that it would be a part of any Antalya itinerary.

7. Exploring the Ancient City of Perge

For the readers in search of a much deeper understanding of Antalya's rich history, Ancient City of Perge is a must-see place. I felt myself traveling in time, coming into this archaeological wonder. The gigantic ruins of the Hellenistic period leave one speechless. While walking along the ancient street, I couldn't help getting fascinated by remnants of the huge amphitheater, which once reverberated the voices of thousands. These impressively architectured and sprawling ruins bring into sharp focus the significance which this city held in history.

Must-See Attractions in Perge

Some of the most viewed places in Perge, one of the essential things to do in Antalya, that depict its rich history include:

  1. Amphitheatre: This is a truly impressive building that features fully surviving seating and a stage area to show how entertainment in antiquity was possible.
  2. Roman Baths: This structure showed the daily life people led in the times of the Romans when visiting, with their well-detailed mosaics and their elaborated designs.

Perge is a living ruin rather than a static one, with new discoveries turning up day after day. Archaeologists have continually unearthed treasures that add new layers to our understanding of this remarkable site. Excavations within recent times have exposed the following:

  • Newly uncovered structures: These include houses and public buildings that say more about social relations and the town planning of the time.
  • Artifacts: From pottery items to coins, each one of them narrates something, relating ancient civilizations to our present.

The walk through Perge was a travel back through time, as if I was part of history. It was tantalizing to envision daily aspects of life in this busy city so many years ago. This combination of preservation and discovery makes it an enriching experience for anyone who wants to delve deep into Antalya's rich heritage.

8. Hiking at Kursunlu Waterfalls National Park

Situated in a very dense pine forest, Kursunlu Waterfalls National Park offers the chance for an enjoyable trip into nature. The very moment I stepped on the paths, it was like being in some hidden paradise: the soothing sound of water falling from the fall blended well with the chirping of birds and rustling leaves that form an enchanting backdrop for any outdoor adventurer.

Kursunlu Waterfalls.Kursunlu Waterfalls.

The trails twist and turn through dynamic flora and fauna, where every step may bring something different from this vibrant ecosystem found here. Along the path were jays of wild flowers and playing squirrels darting from tree to tree. This rich tapestry of life added an extra layer of fun to my hike, turning it into an unforgettable experience. Planning a day out in Kursunlu Waterfalls National Park will require one to take along the following things:

  • Comfortable hiking shoes: You will be using these for walking on uneven and rugged terrain.
  • Water bottle: Keep hydrated during your escapades.
  • Snacks: Keep your energy levels with light refreshments.
  • Camera: The sceneries that you are going to witness are simply breathtaking, and these are moments you would like to preserve for a lifetime.

With its beauteous landscape and calm atmosphere, Kursunlu Waterfalls National Park is a place that no nature searcher around Antalya should miss. Something new reveals itself every time one visits, and each walk feels like a fresh adventure waiting to be hiked.

9. Taking in Views from Tünektepe Hill

All you have to do to have fun is take the cable car up the Tünektepe hill. As your car makes its ascent, get ready for an unforgettable encounter with the panoramic views over the coast of Antalya, which will render you absolutely speechless. The vibrant blues from the Mediterranean Sea interpose perfectly with the lush greenery of the surrounding hills and create this visual feast.

For photography enthusiasts, timing is everything. Particularly, sunrise and sunset are those magic moments that capture breathtaking shots. The golden hues and soft light turn the landscape into a painter's canvas, making it an ideal backdrop for those Instagram-worthy photos.

Making Your Visit Special

Whether one is with the family or taking this time to themselves, here are ways to enhance it into a more spectacular time on Tünektepe Hill:

  • Take along a picnic: Take some local delicacies with you and enjoy the views.
  • Take a leisurely walk: Around the top, just stroll down the trails that are nearby once you complete your ride on the cable car. The fresh air and beautiful scenery invigorate one.
  • Your comments/Experiences: Share a smile or two with fellow travelers or locals that you meet on the way-there's always something new to learn!

The interest in Tünektepe Hill is surely greater, and for that reason alone, it constitutes an essential outdoor activity near Antalya. Do not miss this unique experience that combines adventure with striking beauty to discover everything that Antalya has in store.

10. Shopping at Antalya Bazaar

The bazaars of Antalya represent a great approach to having really exciting shopping and becoming deeply acquainted with the most vivid colors of the local culture. Walking around these full-of-life markets, I couldn't help but let myself be charmed by the bright colors and enticing odors filling the air.

One of AntalyaOne of Antalya's bazaars, a can't-miss highlight in Antalya.

Here is what made my adventure unforgettable:

  • Traditional Markets: The heart of Antalya is alive with traditional markets, from the Grand Bazaar down to smaller local spots, each corner reveals something new and exciting.
  • Unique Crafts: Searching for unique souvenirs of Antalya turned out to be quite a fun treasure hunt. Handmade ceramics, intensely interlaced textiles, and, of course, the forbidden fruits of Turkish delight so delicious in a great variety of flavors-just make for perfect presents or for an indulgent treat for oneself.
  • Bargaining Tips: The whole haggling with the local vendors is half the fun. Don't be affrighted to bargain, since this is expected of you, too. First, offer half of what they ask for, and then bask in the nonchalant give-and-take. That will not only let you get a better deal but also help you get in contact with the locals, ultimately enhancing your shopping experience.

Passing through these colorful stalls, one should also keep in mind the craftsmanship that is in every particular thing. A little more than collecting goods in Antalya, shopping here is about going to immerse oneself in a broad canopy of history and culture. Every single purchase narrates a story that makes your memories even more special.

Conclusion

Antalya is a blast of unforgettable experiences that beg to be discovered. To sum things up, here is what seemed to stand out from among the best things to do in Antalya:
